Job Summary

We're looking for an experienced Staff Software Engineer with strong architecture expertise and a solid background in designing testable and reliable systems to join our fast-paced, mission-centered team. The ideal candidate will have a unique blend of technical expertise, insatiable curiosity, and an analytical mindset. This person should be comfortable working independently, providing technical leadership, and mentoring other engineers in the architecture, design, development, and testing of mission-critical services, applications, and infrastructure layers. Experience with TypeScript, Amazon Web Services (AWS), or PostgreSQL is helpful to succeed quickly in this role. The Staff Software Engineer will have a significant impact on our business success as well as the success of millions of university students.

Duties & Responsibilities

Own the design and implementation of large-scale systems Communicates technical strategy across teams Design and implement comprehensive test strategies to ensure the reliability, scalability, and performance of systems, including unit tests, integration tests, and end-to-end testing Mentor fellow engineers Review code developed by other engineers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency) Write quality product, system development code and tests Contribute to existing documentation or educational content and adapt content based on product/program updates and user feedback Track and triage production and system issues. Debug/resolve by analyzing the sources of issues and the impact on service operations and quality Work with architects to develop technical requirements and broad system design Requirements

10+ years of software development experience 7+ years of experience developing complex, product-focused codebases 3+ years of experience leading or mentoring other engineers Experience building CI/CD pipelines, using observability tools and modern typescript automation testing tooling and frameworks Real-world experience developing with modern programming languages, preferably with Typescript Proven track record of building successful full-stack applications, products, or platforms Self-sufficient and highly motivated, self-directed and possesses high energy and a passion for RedShelf's mission Other Desirable Skills/Experience

Comfortable using GenAI tools to assist in daily engineering activities Knowledge and appreciation of the advances in higher educational software, course materials, and digital publishing is a plus Background and/or experience in educational technology and/or publishing
