Job Description
The Mechanical Designer role will contribute directly to the mechanical design & development of electronic products for integrated RF/microwave assemblies for various applications including antennas, antenna positioners, electronic control devices, and RF systems and subsystems. After initial onboarding and Product Life-Cycle Management (PLM) system training, this role utilizes skills in the following areas:
Drafting per industry standards, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and SOLIDWORKS® (3D Solid Models).Creation and documentation of designs from concept through internal/external production.Relationships between component parts, circuitry, connectors, motorized assemblies, and enclosures to meet electrical, mechanical, environmental, cost, and manufacturability requirements.This position works closely with other engineering functions such as electrical, manufacturing, PCB design, software, and test.Comprehension of the relationship of various parts/assemblies to a whole structure or project.Duties & Responsibilities
Create detailed technical solid models and drawings using SOLIDWORKS®.Create Change Orders/Notices to initially release and/or update parts, BOMs, drawings, and documents using a PLM system.Solve problems related to product design including identification of missing information/correcting documentation sourced from engineering, manufacturing, vendors, and customer input.Utilize knowledge of electromechanical components such as motors, gears, bearings, connectors, PCBs, and cables for designs/drawings/documents.Collaborate with various entities such as procurement department, quality department, electrical/mechanical/manufacturing engineering, and fellow designers to generate, review, and/or update drawings/documents relating to production materials.Coordinate/participate in peer reviews from design concept to production release.Provide engineering input for raw materials/components.Participate in customer/supplier design reviews as required.Utilize MS Office software.Utilize AutoCAD® design tools to maintain legacy 2D documentation.Communicate effectively using verbal and written communication skills.Comply with all Smiths policies and procedures.Diversity & Inclusion

The Individual
Technical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Highly functional knowledge of SolidWorks® is required. A working knowledge of AutoCAD and SolidWorks PDM is a plus.Knowledge of industry drafting standards such as ASME Y14.5 Standards, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to produce clear and accurate product definition.Knowledge of PLM software for creation, structuring, and updating of parts, bills of material (BOMs), drawings, and documents.Knowledge of Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design to Cost (DTC) concepts/strategies.Mathematical skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.Skills in deductive reasoning and problem-solving are required.Skills in the use of MS Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, to provide effective communication of concepts & technical information.Ability to interpret published documentation such as safety rules, operation instructions, maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals.Ability to interpret task/design instructions furnished in a variety of forms such as written, oral, or diagrammatic.Experience:
Minimum of three (3) years of electromechanical packaging experience is preferred but other applicable design related experience may be considered.Experience in military, aviation, or aerospace design or manufacturing industry is a plus.
Education:
Associate degree in Arts/Science (A.A./A.S.), technical school, or equivalent work experience.
Security:
U.S. Person required (U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident). May be required to obtain a security clearance.
