Job Purpose:
The Senior Payroll Accountant ensures the integrity of accounting information by recording, verifying, consolidating and entering transactions in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Essential Functions:
· Pulls payroll reports from Workday and prepares transactions for entry, posts entries upon approval, collects and evaluates data, conducts analysis, and prepares reports as needed
· Prepares and posts entries for the Company’s self-funded insurance plan
o Review actual to budget/estimates for plan costs and claims
o Prepares reconciliations for all self-funded insurance accounts for liabilities, pass-thru accounts, and cash accounts utilized for funding
o Prepares monthly journal entries for insurance expense accruals, claim expenses, stop-loss expense, and reserve estimates.
· Utilizes Workday Financials to extract and analyze payroll data for reporting and reconciliation purposes, ensuring accuracy of both system-generated and manual entries
· Review detailed payroll monthly actual to budget variance reports by location and department to support management in the review of the monthly operating performance
· Develop, refine, document, implement and enforce accounting payroll policies and procedures that will improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the accounting department and the Company in general.
o Identifies opportunities for process improvement and efficiency in payroll accounting
o Develop detailed process controls around payroll and benefits accounting* Supports external audits (annual) related to payroll transactions/balances and processes* Participates in development and review of annual operating budgets alongside FP&A for the payroll model/build* Works alongside HR to ensure employees are set up correctly in Workday HDM* Ensures that all processing and payroll/benefit reporting deadlines are consistently achieved* Assists Controller and the Company, as needed, with payroll financial information requests and questions* Recognizes and upholds the importance of confidentiality in handling sensitive employee payroll, benefit, and incentive compensation data. Interprets and communicates financial reports and results for managers* Opportunity to review and post monthly journal entries, analyses and account reconciliations for a subset of the Company’s centers/practices
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in Accounting or Finance* Minimum of three (3) years of related experience* Experience specific to payroll and benefit (self-funded insurance) accounting* Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)* Proficient with Microsoft Excel functions* Experience with Workday Financial and/or Workday Payroll highly preferred* Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license preferred, not required
