JOB SUMMARY AND QUALIFICATIONS
The Director of Communications and Marketing position is based in Louisville and responsible for overseeing all internal & external communications within VOA and is charged with raising awareness of VOA in all the communities it serves in the 4 state region of KY, TN, WV and Clark and Floyd Counties in Indiana.
This role will lead and develop a strategic vision to elevate the organization's brand, broaden its impact, and enhance its ability to attract resources. This role involves overseeing all aspects of communications, marketing, and public relations activities to strengthen the organization’s visibility, credibility, and influence across target audiences. The Director will ensure consistent, compelling messaging that aligns with the organization’s mission, values, and strategic priorities, and foster a storytelling culture that connects with stakeholders, funders, volunteers, and the communities served.
This role is central to fostering relationships, sharing stories of impact, and strengthening the organization’s reputation and reach. The Director will play a critical role in shaping the organization’s identity and expanding its visibility to further its mission and enhance its growth potential.
WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE FOR THIS ROLE
The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing or a related field. 5 years of experience in copywriting, media, marketing, and/or public relations is required. Communications, fundraising and web content management experience is preferred and experience working on behalf of a non-profit or in an environment dependent on fund-raising is preferred. Prior experience with Microsoft Office, Sharepoint, Asana and Canva is preferred.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Strategic Planning & Leadership
a. Develop, implement, and manage an integrated communications and marketing strategy that advances the organization's mission and supports long-term goals.
b. Collaborate with senior leadership to align communications initiatives with programmatic, advocacy, and development objectives.
c. Provide leadership, mentoring, and professional development to the communications team and coordinate with external agencies as needed.
- Brand Management
a. Uphold and enhance the organization’s brand, ensuring consistency and coherence in all communications.
b. Lead the creation of compelling storytelling narratives that connect the organization’s work with its audiences, capturing the impact of its programs and services.
- Content Development & Editorial Oversight
a. Oversee content creation across digital and traditional channels, including website, newsletters, social media, blogs, and annual reports.
b. Develop messaging guidelines and review all communications materials for alignment with organizational voice and values.
- Media Relations
a. Cultivate and manage relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers to secure coverage and broaden awareness of the organization’s work.
b. Act as a primary spokesperson when appropriate, and prepare leadership and program staff for media interactions and public speaking engagements.
- Digital & Social Media Strategy
a. Lead digital strategy, including website management, SEO, social media, email campaigns, and other digital marketing activities to maximize engagement and reach.
b. Analyze performance data and refine strategies to improve audience engagement and conversion metrics.
- Event Marketing & Promotions
a. Coordinate marketing and communications support for events, campaigns, and initiatives, partnering with development and program teams to drive attendance, donations, and community engagement.
b. Lead planning for annual reports, fundraising campaigns, and other promotional efforts that support organizational goals.
- Stakeholder Engagement & Crisis Communications
a. Design strategies to enhance engagement with donors, partners, volunteers, and other stakeholders.
b. Develop and manage crisis communications plans, and respond to sensitive issues to protect the organization’s reputation.
- Measurement & Reporting
a. Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for communications initiatives; report on ROI and impact of efforts.
b. Regularly provide analytics and insights to inform and refine communications and marketing strategies.
