Responsible for managing, planning, and providing leadership for the Solid Waste Program, Zero Waste Initiative, Recycling Program, Yard Waste Program, and Commercial Waste Program, as well as Development Review (as it relates to solid waste management) and Strategic Planning for these initiatives.The Sustainability Manager creates strategies to make the workplace greener and is responsible for communicating and marketing sustainability campaigns to internal and external stakeholders. This position requires close collaboration with internal staff, Communications and Marketing, and vendors to educate and inform about sustainable changes and their environmental impact.The Sustainability Manager reports to an assigned supervisor and is distinguished from higher classes by its emphasis on Solid Waste/Recycling Programs and the Zero Waste Initiative.EXAMPLES OF WORKThis section of the job description is not intended to be a comprehensive list of duties and responsibilities of the position. The omission of a specific job function does not absolve an employee from being required to perform additional tasks incidental to or inherent in the job.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSManage solid waste programs and initiatives.Design and implement programs to encourage zero waste, recycling, and waste reduction in accordance with the Comprehensive Plan and applicable laws.Ensure effective coordination and communication with other City Departments, neighborhood associations, the public, media, consultants, and private sector representatives.Develop and implement strategies, objectives, procedures, and priorities; allocate resources accordingly.Plan, manage, and develop the departmental budget; monitor expenditures and revenues within the Solid Waste Enterprise Fund.Develop and negotiate contracts with consultants, engineers, architects, contractors, and other agencies for improvements, services, partnerships, and new projects.Assist in formulating policies and procedures as directed by the Public Works Director.Ensure services provided are citizen-centric, productive, effective, and high quality.Recommend personnel actions such as selection, promotion, and discharge.Provide public information on solid waste programs, recycling, zero waste initiatives, and related issues through reports, press releases, and social media.Participate in administering labor agreements.Attend work on a continuous and regular basis.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEGraduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in public administration, planning, economics, environmental studies, or a related subject, and five years of experience in solid waste, including two years in a supervisory capacity; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.CERTIFICATIONS OR LICENSESLicensesCertification as a Recycling Coordinator by the State of Florida is desired.
