a 112-bed care facility, is for Cardiology services and Heart Surgery in the State of Virginia and ranks in the nation for best heart programs.
Cardiac Surgical ICU Unit Description:20 Bed cardiac surgical ICUNurses handle 1-2 patients on this unit based on acuity level.
Nurses provide service to any patients that have undergone open heart surgeries such as CABG, Valve repair or replacement, aneurysm repair, TAVR, ablations, Heart Transplantation, and Mechanical Circulatory Support devices including the Total Artificial Heart and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), and various lung surgeries.
Nurses manage critically ill patients that require intensive hemodynamic monitoring, mechanical ventilation, multiple drug infusions, IABP therapy and CRRT.

This program is designed to blend practical skills with hands-on training, professional development, and mentorship, equipping you with the confidence and expertise needed to excel in your critical care nursing career.
Our Transition to Practice program features a mix of classroom teaching methodologies and a preceptor-based unit orientation. You will engage in 8 sessions that include live simulations, case studies, and problem-based learning. These sessions cover essential topics such as critical care patient assessment and documentation, respiratory and cardiac care, vasoactive medications, hemodynamics and invasive monitoring, neurological care, post-operative and procedural care, GI/renal systems, ACLS mega code, sedation, analgesia, neuromuscular blockade, and effective communication with providers and families.
Trauma 1 Level Care and Team
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is
one of just five Level1 trauma centers in Virginia. It is home to the Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance, a teaching facility, the region's first Magnet hospital and nationally ranked heart program at the Sentara Heart Hospital.
Nurses in a Level 1 trauma center are exposed to the most critically ill and injured patients, often dealing with complex, life-threatening conditions. This experience sharpens nursing ability to rapidly assess, prioritize, and enhances critical thinking and decision-making skills.

Job Summary
Provides supervision of staff, clinical expertise, and oversight of all aspects of operations including patient care, customer service, budget, and risk management. Ensures compliance with organizational and ambulatory care policies, regulations and standards of care and practice and competency of clinical and non-clinical staff. Accountable for developing, monitoring and engaging team members and other resources to improve financial performance, patient experience, quality, safety, access and team member performance. Responsible for interviewing, hiring, developing and retaining staff with the goal of developing a highly reliable work team. Utilizes effective communication and interpersonal skills. Able to adapt leadership style to support achieving department goals and objectives.
BSN required, MSN preferred.
BLS required within 90 days of hire. Cardiac Surgery experience preferred. Specialty certification preferred. Clinical and technical knowledge of the specific work being performed required. Previous supervisory/charge experience preferred.
