The role of plasma extracellular vesicles in heart failure inflammation. Purpose of the research project(s) this position supports:

Recent studies suggest chronic sterile inflammation contributes to heart failure (HF) progression; however, a failure to establish a causal relationship between systemic inflammation and HF outcomes has essentially halted progress in this field. Our lab studies how monocytes, a key player in HF inflammation, amplify the inflammatory signal via extracellular vesicle. Research Sponsors/Stakeholders:

VA, Locke Foundation DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Conducting Experiments – 80% The focus of the Research Scientist Associate position within the Wang Lab is to perform various molecular and cellular biological experiments to produce high quality scientific data for publications, grant applications, and others. More specifically, the scope of the job includes conducting and designing experiments using techniques listed below: Cell-based assays—culturing and stimulating THP-1 cells with various pro-inflammatory stimuli and siRNA knockdown screen. ELISA of cytokines of culture media and plasma. Measuring EV content in culture media and plasma using FACS. Various molecular biological procedures—immunoprecipitation-Western blot analysis, Protein purification, RT-qPCR, immunostaining, and cloning. Writing: (a) Write a protocol and maintain it updated, (b) write methodology and result sections of the manuscripts, (c) generate figures that depict the results of the performed experiments, and (d) re-format the manuscripts for appropriate journal styles. Quantification of scanned or acquired images such as electron microscopic and immunohistochemistry images using image-analysis software. The Research Scientist will report to and work closely with the Principal Investigator, Dr. Dennis Wang, who will mentor him/her for his/her professional goals and development. Operations/Administration – 20% Independently and collaboratively support lab management and operation as part of the research activity, such as identification and procurement of laboratory supply and service. Support and participate in regulatory and certification processes and laboratory compliance. Support and participate in laboratory orientation of new lab personnel. Collaborate with and support the PI/supervisor with multiple laboratory experiments, as delegated by the PI/supervisor. Prepare, optimize and execute experiment protocols; analyze the data and generate and present summary and reports for research projects and laboratory activities per instruction. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biotechnology and 1 year of laboratory experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Excellent communication skills and good people skills. Self-motivator with positive attitude. Ability to produce the data in a reproducible fashion. Ability to adhere to the established protocols. Ability to improve and trouble-shoot a protocol. Good hands in basic experiments. Experience and significant understanding in molecular biology and/or biotechnology. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biotechnology. Some real wet lab experience and superior ability to learn the new techniques and protocols. Application Process:
