The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.

About the job:

We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer to help design, develop, and support our online sales platform for the I Buy I Sell Consumer portfolio within Distribution Technology. Your role is to be a technical thought leader for your aligned agile squad and across the portfolio. Your team works on high priority USRM strategic initiatives such as building features that enable a best-in-class digital user experience supported by an evolving, modernized technology stack. You will collaborate closely with solutions engineers and architects within USRM Technology to influence and ensure alignment with our strategic objectives.

You are accountable for the delivery of quality software that brings value to Liberty Mutual and to our users. You ensure that your squads make performant and scalable technology choices. As a leader in this consumer-centric part of the organization, you keep the focus on providing customer value by urging and supporting a development process based on A/B testing, fast iteration, analytics, and user research.

What you'll do:
  • Be a servant technical leader with a team-first mindset
  • Support teams in delivering services with high availability, low latency, and scalability in a microservice architecture
  • Lead technical features
  • Facilitate collaboration between engineers, product owners, and UX designers
  • Possess a deep understanding of the product and business goals which you can translate into technology decisions
  • Architect, design, develop, deploy and operate services that serve millions of users
  • Mentor other engineers
  • Drive good engineering practices within your team, and help define and teach these practices within the larger developer community
  • Contribute to the vision and long-term strategy in your domain of expertise
  • Find ways to spread learning across the organization (gives technical talks, write blogs, etc.)
  • Be a department-level authority in a particular area or go-to person for solving problems


Qualifications
Experience
  • Eight or more years of software engineering experience
  • Strong background in business operations and strategies, including global technology and financial services trends
  • Hands-on involvement with layered systems architectures, designs and shared software concepts
  • Familiarity with functional and system integration testing
  • Experience working in an agile environment

Who you are:
  • You have a bachelor's or master's degree with experience building web and distributed system applications in a product-driven environment
  • Proficient in modern programming concepts including microservices, containerization, service monitoring, serverless, event-driven programming, and DevOps via CI/CD and automation
  • You are knowledgeable of several programming languages including but not limited to JavaScript/NodeJS, Java, GraphQL, React, Spring Boot
  • You have experience with AWS cloud technologies
  • You have extensive experience working hands-on as a Software Engineer in an agile environment
  • You mentor and support your peers and engineering teams
  • You have deep knowledge of how to write distributed, high-volume services
  • Have a deep understanding of system design, data structures, and algorithms and understand how to apply them to design pragmatic solutions
  • You care about security, quality and you know what it means to ship high-quality code and ensure the security of our applications
  • You have experience in identifying, debugging, and resolving complex production issues
