Position Title: Surveillance Officer, Crypto Assets

Department: Market Surveillance

Location: Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal

Status: Permanent Full-time (Hybrid)

Target Hiring Range: $85,000 - $100,000

Day in the life of:

The position is accountable for contributing to the market integrity of the Canadian crypto-assets trading platforms through the provision of trade surveillance, detection, and referral of violations of CIRO market rules and policies.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Supporting role in the development of the crypto-assets surveillance framework within the organization
  • Conduct trade surveillance of crypto-assets trading activity into alleged UMIR or Canadian Securities law violations, compiling relevant evidence and conducting trading analysis
  • Monitor trading activity to ensure crypto-assets trading platforms compliance with Universal Market Integrity Rules (UMIR) using trade surveillance systems as well as analysis of historical activity.
  • Analyze trading patterns to identify breaches of the trading rules
  • Assist in developing new detection tools and responding to evolving trading patterns and exchange facilities.
  • Stay up to date on industry trends through education sessions and industry seminars
  • Engage teams across functional areas, most notably market policy, analytics, trade review/analysis and other surveillance product mixes such as equity and cross-asset.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with other regulatory and investigative departments
  • Contribute to the effectiveness of the Department in meeting its objectives and long-term strategies
  • Provide coverage in cross-assets surveillance
  • Perform deep analysis into reference data. Activities include but are not limited to gap analysis, discrepancy identification, pattern identification, and categorization verification
  • Assist with special projects as needed


Skills and Competencies:

Must-Haves

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field
  • A minimum of 5 years of trading, compliance, supervision experience or in a technology support role in a trading environment
  • Deep understanding of crypto-assets and its trading practices
  • Knowledge of market regulation trading rules and operations
  • Knowledge of trading systems and Canadian market structure
  • Must have confidence and experience working with large data sets, using business tools (Power BI, etc)
  • Exposure to programming (such as Python, Jupyter notebooks, SQL or others)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail


Nice-to-Haves

  • Completion of the Canadian Securities and Trader Training courses, an asset
  • Completion of the Derivatives Fundamentals course, an asset
  • French (bilingual) would be an asset
  • Experience with Derivatives trading and/or regulation would be an asset
