Introduction & Key Role Objectives

WJ Groundwater is the leading construction dewatering and groundwater specialist in the UK with operations in Canada, the Middle East, Poland & the Philippines. We have specialized plant and equipment that allows us to install custom dewatering systems in various environments including from within tunnels and shafts and from the surface.

The primary function of this position is to ensure water treatment system performance meets client expectations while delivering projects on time and within budget. This role will lead the design of water treatment systems and act as the main point of contact for clients across various construction projects.

Reports to Water Treatment Division Manager

This role has two key objectives:
  1. Assist in the design of and facilitate the development of water treatment systems related to construction dewatering activities.
  2. Provide clear and focused leadership on all project functions related to project management, project control, design and engineering management, and construction management to meet the client's overall goals.


Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Support in water process design activities, including equipment sizing and selection for water treatment plants, reservoirs, pumping stations and related infrastructure.
  • Provide detailed calculations for water processes.
  • Oversee site activities and closely liaise with clients, site staff, supervisors, subcontractors and suppliers to resolve any issues and maintain project progress.
  • Prepare Method Statements, working drawings, and work procedures
  • Manage water treatment projects involving multi-disciplinary engineering teams, including structural, architectural, building and process mechanical, I&C, electrical, etc.
  • Develop and monitor project schedules for design and contract administration.
  • Coordinate work processes to ensure logical sequencing, facilitate communication and data flow among team members, and manage the integration of design changes.
  • Maintain high-quality documentation of WJ's contractual activities including the collection, collation and presentation of data.
  • Perform project management and dissemination responsibilities, including drafting regular progress reports and participating in team meetings.
  • Undertake business development activities, including site visits, client discussions, and the preparation of tenders and quotations for new contracts
  • Ensure personal health and safety, prepare Risk Assessments, brief, and audit site staff to enforce safe working practices.
  • Track project expenditures and workforce requirements to ensure financial profitability.
  • Prepare accurate and timely engineering and financial status reports for WJ's clients.
  • Manage project programs to meet contractual targets and consistently achieve top-tier industry benchmarks for quality, financials, and overall project delivery.


Qualifications & Experience
  • A motivated and hardworking individual with good written and communication skills is essential.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Chemical, Civil, Geotechnical, Environmental) or a related discipline with a focus on water treatment, reservoirs, and pumping stations.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in project management or site supervision within the water treatment or construction industry or in a similar environment.
  • Minimum of 3 years of processing design, project management and/or construction experience in water treatment plants, reservoirs, pumping stations and related infrastructure.
  • Comprehensive understanding of water management, hydrogeology, engineering geology, or civil engineering.
  • Registered Professional Engineer in Ontario or eligibility within 12 months is an asset.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical, instrumentation, and process controls is an asset.
  • Familiarity with construction industry contracts and commercial issues is preferred.
  • Advanced IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and AutoCAD
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills, capable of managing multiple high-value projects under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to read and modify technical drawings and effectively communicate complex ideas to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Resourcefulness, initiative, and the ability to work independently.
  • A valid driver's licence and access to a vehicle is required for travel between project sites.


Working Conditions

This role is primarily based at our head office in Toronto but requires site visits for client meetings, site inspections, inductions, and project briefings, with occasional full-day work on client worksites. The role involves installing water treatment systems in various environments, including both outdoor and indoor settings, such as tunnels, adits, and shafts, which are classified as low to medium risk confined spaces. Comfort with working in all weather conditions, on heavy industrial construction sites, and within confined spaces is essential.

Standard working hours are from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday. Occasional flexibility in working hours may be required.
