Overview:
We're hiring a Senior Artificial Intelligence Data Scientist having AI/ML development and deployment skills! The position and its focus are to design, develop and move to production AI/ML tools and analytics that enhance and evolve business operations and scientific decision-making capability and related activities at ORNL.Qualified applicants will have a solid foundation of Data Science skills and mid-level Generative AI and Machine Learning skills.
This position resides in the Enterprise Applications & Business Intelligence group, in the Application Development Division of the Information Technology Services Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This position will provide support for ORNL's Artificial and Business Intelligence activities which potentially cover all areas of corporate data (business, human capital management, facilities, operations, and research). ORNL's AI/ML models and analytics are heavily centered on Microsoft Azure and SAP technologies.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Development and support of corporate projects and models, reports and dashboards utilizing Azure AI/ML and other Microsoft 365 and Azure related Power apps and reporting tools.Collaboration with business and scientific/technical stakeholders to understand needs and gather detailed actionable requirements.Analysis of emerging trends and technologies to provide recommendations for roadmaps and AI strategy. To include Generative AI and ML techniques and solution methods. LLM/GPT CICD pipelines and diagnostic monitoring for clients or set up for client self-monitoring.Development and implementation of master data management strategy to include implementation of measures to ensure data accuracy, cleanliness, transformation and accessibility.Ethical and responsible use of AI in line with ORNL policy and guidelines.Collaboration with other DOE labs and private sector companies to understand and mature ORNL capabilities.Become the Go-To DOE lab for AI/ML best practices across lab domains.Adherence to ORNL and ITSD software quality assurance standards and ITIL effective practices.Support of and adherence to ORNL and ITSD project management requirements and Guidance for Researchers and general users of AI models within ORNL guidelines.Deliver ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Development and support of data warehouse technologies, Azure endpoints and High-Performance Computing, including the provisioning of AI focused GPUs from NVIDIA and AMD. AI and ML applied experience and a general understanding of potential business and research science use cases.Provide personal training for end users as needed, on Artificial Intelligence tools and effective practices.Basic Qualifications:
A BS in computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, business analytics management, applied statistical analytics, or a related field of study and eight (8) to twelve (12) years of relevant experience is required for consideration. An overall combination of equivalent experience may be considered.
Masters and PhD degree holders in the same fields of study are also encouraged to apply. Masters' holders should have seven (7) to ten (10) years of relevant experience and PhD holders should have four (4) to six (6) years of relevant experience. An overall combination of equivalent experience may be considered.
Prior demonstrated AI/ML development and deployment in independent environments and Microsoft Azure development experience including requirements gathering, design, and deployment of reporting solutions.The candidate must be a results-motivated, curious, self-starter who is comfortable working as part of a BI team, or as an independent BI consultant for project-based work on occasion. The candidate must demonstrate:
A strong emphasis in delighting customer and end-user needs.Excellent written and verbal communications skills.Excellent relational client-facing skills, effective exploratory analytical thinking, and attention to detail.The attitude of an analytical doer that creatively problem solves.A deeply curious approach toward novel development, planning, support, design, modification and testing of data warehouse cubes, models, dimensions, measures, views and reports.Experience creating AI solutions using MS Azure Open AI Studio, Azure SQL, and MS Azure tool sets.Experience with Microsoft CoPilot, OpenAI tools and API's for GPT creation, Hugging Face, LangChain, Large Language Model's, Generative AI or similar tools.A proven ability to innovate as work demands.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with Microsoft Power apps and data visualization to represent complex data concepts that foster business transparency and support effective decision making.Understanding of ETL (extract, transform, load) frameworks, 1-2 years' experience creating new ETL frameworks using Generative AI and agentic based modeling techniques.Understanding of multidimensional and tabular modelling, vector databases, Graph DB.Experience using SQL Server Database engine (SSMS), SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), and SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS).Experience using Microsoft Visual Studio or Visual Studio Code, Python, PyTorch, TensorFlow.2-3 years' experience leading group projects and programs with current AI/ML, Data Science or Data Analytic tools including using and teaching low code-no code skills to others.Knowledge of current ORNL business processes and applications (or similar) is a bonus.Knowledge of Microsoft SharePoint technologies is a bonus.
