Carilion Clinic’s Legal Services Department provides comprehensive legal advice and support concerning all aspects of its health care enterprise. Employing over 13,000 individuals, Carilion seeks a labor and employment attorney, preferably with experience with healthcare clients, to join its team. It is envisioned that this Associate General Counsel will spend a majority of their time on various employment, labor and related matters, while also working on additional matters as assigned, such as contractual matters common to a health system.Specific responsibilities include:Providing legal counsel on full range of employment & labor law matters, including hiring, performance management, discipline, termination, leaves of absence and accommodations issues, restrictive covenants and affirmative action;Drafting, revising and reviewing employment-related contracts, agreements, severance agreements, releases, policies, procedures, training materials, and other written materials and handbooks;Handling administrative and arbitration matters, such as responses to government agency audits and investigations (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Department of Labor, Office of Federal Contract Compliance, Virginia Attorney General, Virginia Human Rights Commission) as well as employment-related litigation;Advising on matters relating to allegations of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation and assisting in investigations;Providing legal advice and strategy to further support Inclusion and Diversity initiatives;Staying abreast of developments in federal, state, and local employment and labor law, provide updates and training to cross-functional colleagues and assist in the development and implementation of related compliance plans;Efficiently utilizing and overseeing the work of outside counsel;Working effectively with business and functional leaders as well as other members of the Legal Department (8 attorneys and 2 paralegals), with limited supervision.Perform other duties as directed, including outside traditional employment law, such as: Drafting, revising and reviewing a broad spectrum of non-employment contracts to include areas such as purchasing (supply chain and materials management), IT and real estate; Analyzing arrangements between hospitals and other parties on compliance for Stark, Anti-Kickback Statute, and other fraud and abuse laws, EMTALA, HIPAA, antitrust laws, and any other regulatory requirements; Developing new areas of sub-specialty as needs may arise.Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from an accredited law school required.Experience:

Minimum of four (4) years of legal work experience as in-house counsel or in a law firm providing counsel on employment and labor law, preferably for hospitals or other healthcare clients.Licensure/certification:

Eligible to practice as an attorney within the Commonwealth of Virginia via a Virginia license or in-house counsel designation.Other Minimum Qualifications:

Must be a self-starter with an attention to detail who meets deadlines with changing priorities and who has excellent judgment and communication skills.About Carilion
