POSITION DESCRIPTIONBuilding and Zoning OfficialFLSA Status: ExemptHiring Range: $70,000 – $90,000Position Summary:The City of Sandwich is seeking a qualified Building & Zoning Official to oversee building and development projects, ensuring compliance with the City’s building codes and zoning ordinances. This position involves performing detailed inspections, managing permits, and coordinating the activities of inspectors and consultants. The Building & Zoning Official will also address complaints, enforce compliance, and serve as the zoning officer and City Fire Marshal.Key Responsibilities:
Oversee building permit processes, ensuring compliance with building codes and regulatory requirements.Conduct inspections and coordinate the permitting process for new and existing buildings.Manage building and zoning code compliance and resolve related complaints.Administer zoning ordinances, interpret codes for staff and customers, and serve as the liaison to the Plan Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals.Coordinate with the City Engineer and manage site development permit reviews.Enforce zoning and building code violations, including issuing notices, citations, and fines.Maintain accurate city property records and provide regular reports to the mayor and City Council.Assist with budgeting and recommend updates to the Municipal Code.Ensure all buildings comply with fire regulations, acting as City Fire Marshal.Provide guidance and training for staff and assist with other department-related duties.Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, construction management, or other discipline is preferred. Other related experience and/or combination of education and experience may be considered.ICC Certification as a Certified Building Official or Master Code Professional (MCP) is preferred (non-certified candidates must obtain certification within a specified period of time).Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks.Ability to efficiently and accurately interpret building, zoning, stormwater, and fire codes.Proficient with office software; experience with building permit software is a plus.Working Conditions:Work is performed in both office and construction site environments, with occasional physical movement required.
