Requirements

The University Fleet Manager manages all the University vehicle and equipment consisting of over 600 vehicles, heavy equipment, landscape equipment, transit buses, 33 building emergency generators and all fuel storage tanks. They oversee the operation of the University fueling facility and fuel treatment and maintenance program, planning, scheduling, and directing all activities to determine repair methods. Maintaining regulatory compliance in accordance with DC and Federal Laws, the incumbent has duties that include, but are not limited to:

Oversee the operation of fueling facility, including purchase and distribution.

Manage University vehicle and heavy equipment selection, purchase, and maintenance.

Oversee a repair parts inventory of $125,000, assisting in the development and overseeing material and equipment budget.

Research new technology and alternative transportation methods.

Specify vehicles for procurement with suggestions on sustainability and future requirement based needs, coordinating fleet procurement via capital or operating leasing, purchasing and rentals.

Manage fleet centralization and motor pool, University snow plowing operations, and special projects as needed.

Work Interactions

This position reports directly to the Director of the Office of Transportation Management. Reporting directly to this position is the Garage Supervisor. Six Mechanics, one Trades’ helper and one Inventory Control Assistant report indirectly. The garage services over 600 pieces of equipment including, cars, buses, trucks, diesel/gas generators, utility carts, compactors, wreckers, Police, ambulances and other alternative specific types of vehicles and/or engine power equipment. Detailed coordination is required with every Campus department at the University to ensure safe and efficient maintenance, utilization, risk assessment and licensing. The incumbent interacts with the University community as vehicles and equipment need service. Errors in diagnosing problems or non-adherence to service manuals or manufacturer’s specifications could cause breakdowns that might result in danger to vehicle occupants and/or equipment users. The safety of the University community when operating University vehicles and equipment depends on how well the incumbent performs duties.

Requirements and Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalency; College degree preferred

Any combination of technical education and experiences equivalent to 10-15 years of verifiable, progressive experience working in a large shop environment performing problem diagnosis, repair and inspection of a variety of transportation vehicles and engine-powered equipment

Knowledge of the standard tools, equipment, test procedures and practices used in the repair and preventive maintenance of equipment

Knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation and relationships of a variety of vehicles and engine powered equipment, hydraulic lifting, loading, turning, and positioning systems including their mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic controls. Knowledge of how computer, electrical, transistorized and other non-mechanical systems affects the operation of mechanical systems

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical trades with skills to diagnose mechanical and related malfunctions

Skills for the use of hand and power tools and equipment associated with the transit maintenance trade

Requires comprehensive knowledge in all aspects of air conditioning systems, repair, recovery and maintenance, for all equipment and vehicles

A valid current driver’s license from employee’s state of residence with the ability to meet University requirements for vehicle operation

Must have DC Class A and B Operator license for Underground Fuel storage tanks and Universal Refrigerant license

Computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office and Database software applications, with the capability of conducting training classes

Good verbal, written and analyzing skills are necessary

Working Conditions

The incumbent works in a centralized equipment maintenance facility, mechanical rooms, rooftops or wherever breakdowns occur including all weather conditions. Work can be conducted in a ‘shop environment’ where loud noises, vibrations, dust, dirt and grease are normal. They perform strenuous work while standing, lying down or sitting and frequently pulls, pushes, lifts, and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. The incumbent will be required to push, pull, turn position, and otherwise move parts, assemblies, components, equipment and tools, often near or immediately adjacent to running engines where there is exposure to compressed air, electricity, belts, pulleys, fan blades and sharp edges. Incumbent may be faced with hazardous work conditions working with spring loaded parts, lifts and presses on wet and greasy floors, hot hydraulic fluids and oils, battery acid and cleaning solvents and at heights 10-20 feet above ground. These working conditions require employees to strictly follow safety procedures and regularly employ safety devices, eye and face shields, respiratory masks and steel toe shoes. The University Fleet Manager will continuously be exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises and strains as eye, ear, nose, and throat and skin irritations.

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$66,783.00 - $126,720.23

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
