Office of the Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias Job Title: Database Administrator_DB2/SQL (ISA I) Division: Data Center Services Union: IFT Location: 2701 S Dirksen Pkwy , Springfield, IL Sangamon County (On-Site) Salary: Salary $4,865.00 monthly - commensurate with experience Overview: Serves as a technical expert in an assigned area of database design and participates in the utilization of advanced programming languages and systems and programming techniques. Duties and Responsibilities: From design criteria supplied by Systems and Programming, build the description of new databases and build the physical structures on the mainframe to support user departments such as, but not limited to, Vehicle Services, Driver Services, etc.; this function will be done for the various levels of support, production, development and test on the IBM mainframe and on the production and test levels of the Bull mainframe as long as it is in use; review DB2 file designs from Systems and Programming for consistency and adherence to standards in naming and cataloging conventions. Create and maintain changes to existing database structures on the mainframes to support systems for the user departments, such as, but not limited to, Vehicle Services, Driver Services, etc.; this function will be done for the various levels of support, production, development and test on the IBM mainframe and on the production and test levels of the Bull mainframe as long as it is in use. Administer the DB2 Database software system, this includes granting authorities to use resources, to perform specific accessing functions, and to control code changes; install new software code releases and updates; define and control D132 systems for TEST, DEVL, and PROD; monitor the performance of the DB systems and tune the access paths as appropriate. Coordinate with personnel from Systems and Programming, Transaction Processing, specialists and Production Assurance personnel the implementation of new databases, changes to databases, or changes from test to production environments. Prepare and maintain documentation for the mainframe data file structures/designs; monitor file space full exceptions and grow the file space to avoid outages. Provide procedures for backing up and recovering Systems Data (Catalogs, DB2 logs, DB2PM, RMDS, DBXPERT, etc. Maintain user contact by attending meetings to gain better understanding of user requirements in areas such as, but not limited to Vehicle Services, Driver Services, etc. Performs other duties as required or assigned. Education and Experience: Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of two years of college, with coursework in the computer science field AND four years of experience with technical systems and/or programming experience and/or IT project management OR any equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Requires extensive knowledge of systems design and implementation, including the way programs are written, compiled, and tested, the methods of operating computers, and the way data is transcribed into a form suitable for reading by computer and has an appreciation of the wider business context for those programs. Requires excellent oral and written communication skills for effective engagement with colleagues and internal users/customers. Requires extensive knowledge necessary to effectively perform the ability to exercise sound judgement in analyzing, appraising, evaluating, and solving problems of a procedural, organizational, administrative, and technical nature. Requires awareness and adherence to organizational standards for security, privacy and ethics. Requires extensive knowledge of the devices for capturing data for computers and the means available for receiving and transmitting data from remote locations to a computer. Requires extensive knowledge of the principles and techniques of computer system documentation. Requires extensive knowledge of the advantages and limitations of computer communication, and information retrieval systems as management information tools. Requires the ability to organize facts and findings, analyze data logically and to present results with clarity and comprehension, orally and in written or graphic form. Requires the ability to use and understand appropriate methods, tools, applications, and processes to demonstrate a rational and organized approach to work. Requires willingness to travel and possession of a valid Illinois drivers license as required by individual positions within the class.
