The class works under general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.Minimum RequirementsHigh school diploma or GED.Vocational, technical or trade school training in automotive technology preferred.Two (2) years of full-time equivalent experience in the repair and maintenance of Fire Trucks and/or Ambulances or three (3) years of experience working on medium and heavy-duty vehicles.Experience must have included preventative maintenance checks, computerized diagnostics, and complex electrical, mechanical and hydraulic troubleshooting.Five (5) years of full-time equivalent experience in the repair of complicated motor control panels and switches and gasoline and diesel emergency power supply systems or closely related experience. Must obtain Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification within one (1) year of employment.Must be a Certified as a Motor Vehicle Inspector, licensed by the State of Virginia, or the ability to pass the requirements to obtain license within 90-days.Must obtain and maintain ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications in the truck content areas of "Electrical/Electronic Systems", "Diesel Engine" and ASE Medium/Heavy Brakes within one (1) year of employment.Must possess a State of Virginia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or have the ability to obtain within 180 days of employment. Must possess a valid driver's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City's current substance abuse policy.Must successfully pass a background check related to this position prior to any offer of employment or promotion. Additional Requirements Must possess a complete set of automotive mechanic tools at all times while in this position.
