The Genetics Division of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, University of Washington (UW) Medicine, is recruiting a full-time faculty member on the Clinician-Teacher pathway at the rank of Assistant Professor without tenure by reason of funding. Salary and academic appointment at University of Washington will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and academic rank. The Genetics Division includes faculty who collaborate with laboratory geneticists, medical geneticists, obstetricians, oncologists, and researchers across UW Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, and Seattle Children’s Hospital in an extremely collegial, supportive, and interactive environment.

This role will serve as an Associate Director in the Genetics Division, overseeing clinical services that include high-complexity tests such as clinical exome/genome sequencing, noninvasive prenatal screening, and repeat expansion testing. For candidates with board certification in cytogenetics, there is an opportunity to take on related clinical responsibilities.

The position also offers the chance to engage in method validation and clinical research, contributing to scientific presentations and publications. Additionally, the role includes teaching responsibilities, including residents, fellows, medical students, and undergraduate students in medical laboratory science.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a focused area of scholarship aligned with their clinical and/or educational interests. You will be joining a large clinical laboratory team of 20 ABMGG/ABP board-certified laboratory directors, collectively responsible for signing out over 25,000 tests annually.

Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to, expertise in clinical laboratory genomics with subspecialty expertise in the genetic diagnosis of Mendelian disorders, expertise in the clinical interpretation of test results, and a record of scholarship, as documented by publications.

Assistant Professors without tenure are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. This position remains open until filled with a targeted start date of July 1, 2025, but the start date is flexible.

UW Medicine faculty engage in patient care, educational programs, and translational research. To be eligible for UW sponsorship for an H1-B visa, graduates of non-U.S. medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

The base salary range for this position will be: Assistant Professor range: $12,131.50 to $22,595.50 per month ($145,578 to $271,146 annually) commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. This range is inclusive of base salary provided through the UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan, in addition to base salary provided by the University. Please note that only compensation provided by the University is included in University benefit determinations and calculations. Compensation provided by UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan may provide eligibility for separate benefits offered by that organization.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must have a PhD or MD in a relevant field, or foreign equivalent, and should be Board eligible/certified in Clinical Molecular Genetics, Laboratory Genetics and Genomics, Molecular Genetic Pathology, Clinical Pathology, and/or other CLIA-recognized board certifications.
