THE
POSITION
The
Community Vitality Initiatives Division
of the
Community Development Department
currently has a vacancy for a
Project Planner
to work on the State Street Master Plan and related projects.
The Project Planner will manage aspects of the State Street Master Plan, work closely with the State Street Master Planner, State Street Advisory Committee, and the City's Executive Team and may also work on future capital improvement projects associated with the State Street Master Plan.
This position reports to the State Street Master Planner.
The Project Planner should be a creative and strategic thinker with experience in urban design and placemaking, long range planning, and project management.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced planner interested in community placemaking.
Under minimal supervision, the Project Planner: manages the work associated with the State Street Master Plan; develops policy involving the interpretation of complex laws, rules and regulations; works on interdepartmental and controversial State Street land use issues; regularly interacts with the State Street Advisory Committee, consultants and members of the public; works on major studies, planning documents, and projects for the State Street corridor; researches information, interprets data, and explains regulations and procedures; writes reports and sections of the Master Plan; attends a variety of public hearings, giving presentations, answering questions and providing information; plays a critical role in public engagement; develops contractual agreements, and supervises
the work products of professional consultants; and performs related duties as assigned.
The ideal Project Planner should be detail oriented, a strong writer and public speaker, interested in community engagement, enjoy working in a team environment, be capable of completing tasks with minimal supervision, and be comfortable working with a variety of staff, boards and commissions, community organizations and individuals.
Individuals with a strong planning, urban design, and/or landscape architecture background are encouraged to apply.

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Four (4) to five (5) years of increasingly responsible urban planning experience including one year of project management responsibility.
Education and/or Training:
Equivalent to a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in planning, geography, public administration, business administration or a related field.
A Master's degree in Urban or Regional Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Public Policy and Administration, and/or additional coursework or certification in environmental, advanced planning, or professional studies through the American Institute of Certified Planners, is
highly desirable
.
California planning experience and experience working on downtown placemaking projects is also
desirable
.
License, Certificate and/or Other Requirements:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.
