Professor Dr. Karen Ottemann in the Department of Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position
Junior Specialist in Disease-Causing Bacteria . Under the direction of Dr. Ottemann, the specialist will carry out experiments to explore how the ulcer-causing bacterium Helicobacter pylori establishes and maintains infection. Experiments will include mouse models of infection, bacterial culture, molecular biology, and microscopy.The candidate will also make contributions to lab management by serving as the lab safety representative, ordering supplies and equipment, generating reagents, and ensuring lab compliance with safety and animal welfare regulations. The specialist will be expected to be part of an inclusive and supportive team of students, staff, and faculty, and stay up to date on important scientific developments in the field of microbiology research.Applicants with research expertise in any (or several) of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply: H. pylori molecular biology, general bacterial molecular biology, cloning, mouse husbandry and handling, cell culture, and sterile technique.The hiring unit will not sponsor employment-eligible immigration statuses for this position.Qualifications
Basic qualifications
(required at the time the application is submitted)B.S. (or an equivalent foreign degree) in biological sciences, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field.A minimum of three months' full-time or six months part-time research experience (experience gained as an undergraduate or post-degree will be accepted).Experience with bacterial culture.Experience with bacterial molecular biology.Your application must demonstrate that you meet all of the basic qualifications
