Senior Principal Operations Engineer

Job Overview:
The Principal Operations Engineer (Marine) is responsible for interpreting internal or external business issues and recommending best practices. The Principal Operations Engineer (Marine) may be responsible for leading functional teams or projects and is regarded as a specialist in Marine Operations and/or Marine Project Execution. As such, they must have in-depth expertise in Marine Operations as well as broad knowledge of the Marine construction operations. The Principal Operations Engineer (Marine) provides technical and engineering support to an offshore construction project or tender. The Principal Operations Engineer (Marine) will generally be involved in all stages of a project life cycle from providing technical support to an early engagement commercial pursuit on through to project execution and final close out. The role is an office based position; however, periodic on-site field support (construction sites and offshore locations) may be required to ensure the work scope is properly executed. The Principal Operations Engineer will lead and supervise engineers with less experience and share their conceptual and practical expertise in the support of planning and executing offshore construction projects.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Provide oversight and lead support of the marine aspect of a commercial pursuit including providing input to marine execution strategy, coordination of tender input, ensuring collaborative inputs from all requisite internal stakeholders and subject matter experts, and support in executing the overall commercial strategy for a tender.
Lead and supervise the delivery of project execution plans and marine execution strategies.
Lead and supervise a team of marine operations engineers to ensure the effective and timely execution of marine operations project deliverables.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the team, ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of engineering activities with procurement, construction, and installation phases.
Conduct regular project site visits to monitor progress, address any technical issues, and ensure quality control.
Develop innovative engineering solutions that align with project specifications, client requirements, and regulatory standards.
Oversee the development of detailed marine execution methodologies including all considerations for cost optimization, ensuring feasibility, efficiency, and safety.
Conduct thorough technical reviews and provide recommendations to enhance project performance and mitigate risks.
Implement industry-leading practices and emerging trends to continuously improve processes and methodologies.
Establish and maintain strong relationships with clients, often serving as a primary marine operations technical point of contact throughout the project lifecycle.
Collaborate closely with clients to understand their specific requirements, providing technical expertise and solutions to address their needs.
Proactively identify potential challenges or opportunities and communicate them to the project team, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
Strive to exceed client expectations by delivering superior quality, technical excellence, and outstanding customer service.
Deliver technical presentations, participate in client meetings, and effectively communicate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Oversee the development of marine execution schedules to the responsible planner including the duration of work using historical norms for similar jobs where applicable.
Provide support to projects and tenders with the development and quantification of costs for offshore work. This may include vessel preparatory activities, port clearances, third party subcontractor or vessels, and project tools, equipment, or consumables.
Lead the development (or supervise and review development by others) Installation Procedure(s) by the Level II Procedure and with due regard for safety.
Lead coordination with various interfaces including Vessel Managers, Vessel Operations Managers, Subject Matter Experts, and others as necessary to ensure that necessary equipment, processes, and personnel are available and ready for the project.
Demonstrate active QHSES leadership through regular engagement/alignment with Quality and Safety functions as well as active field engagement and leadership.
Support the Project Manager/Director with the development of commercial claims and variance orders. Provide active identification of changes and demonstrate leadership in the development and management of the same.
Essential Qualifications and Education:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field; (mechanical, civil, subsea, ocean, petroleum, energy, or chemical preferred) or a related field.
10+ years of experience in the oil and gas industry with Major Contractors or consultants.
A minimum of 10 years of Marine Operations and/or marine project execution experience.
Previous experience with broad in-depth knowledge of marine project execution practices and engineering processes including detailed knowledge of offshore operations practices.
Previous in-depth experience including both execution experience and leading operations involving multiple offshore construction methods which could include some of the following: offshore pipelay, structure installation, floating facility installation, flex lay, subsea hardware installation, pre-commissioning, and/or decommissioning operations.
Proficiency in using project planning software including Microsoft suite of applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Project).
In-depth understanding of engineering principles, technical drawings, and specifications.
Knowledge of relevant codes and standards within the EPCI industry.
Excellent leadership skills, with the ability to lead and motivate a team towards project objectives.
Exceptional problem-solving and analytical abilities, with a keen eye for detail and a proactive approach to resolving technical challenges.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with clients, team members, and stakeholders.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Demonstrated experience with cost and risk management and actively seeks to achieve added value.
Previous experience leading a small team of less experienced engineers.
