The St. Louis Jewish Community Center (the J) has been providing excellent health and cultural experiences for the entire community for over 140 years.Summary:The J Summer Day Camp program is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). Camp runs 10 weeks, June 3 - August 9, providing activities that help campers Play, Connect, and Grow throughout each camp day: swimming, arts/crafts, climbing, team building, sports, and much more. The J is currently hiring for Camp Unit Heads for the Chesterfield location.Responsibilities:Supervising campers, ensuring their safety at all times.Supervising Camp Counselors.Maintaining accurate attendance records and groupings.Administering first aid as needed.Planning and scheduling camp activities.Filling in as specialist as needed.Engaging with campers and counselors and ensuring camp counselors are consistently engaging with their campers.Ensuring campers and counselors are behaving appropriately at all times by being both proactive and reactive as necessary.Communicating with parents, as needed, to collaborate on camper behavior, sharing both positive and negative interactions that occur during the camp day.Swimming with campers when directed. Assisting Swim Instructors with lessons as needed, engaging with campers in the pool during free swim. Serving as “eyes on deck” when assigned. Ensuring camp counselors are doing the same.Caring for the physical and emotional well-being of campers and counselors at all times.Being a supportive team member, demonstrating a positive attitude.Providing quality customer service at all times.Recognizing and responding to opportunities for problem solving.Observing camper behavior, assessing its appropriateness, and applying appropriate behavior management techniques (appropriate techniques will be reviewed during staff orientation).Enforcing appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures.Following and enforcing all J and Day Camp rules and regulations.Administering performance reviews under the direction of Site Director(s).Other duties assigned by supervisor.Qualifications:Minimum of 18 years of age.Previous camp or childcare experience essential.Auditory, visual, ambulatory, cognitive, communications, and physical ability to complete major tasks at camp.Ability to relate to and communicate with one’s peer group, parents, as well as to campers’ age and skill levels.Ability to provide guidance, supervision, and engage with children in an enthusiastic manner is required.Ability to assist in teaching an activity; specialized knowledge required for sports, specialty, and arts camps.Ability to assist campers in emergency situations; including fire, evacuation, illness, or injury.Good character, integrity, and adaptability.Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control.Judaic experiences preferred or a willingness to learn.Current American Red Cross CPR/First Aid certification is required for certain camps (training provided if necessary).Note that some camps require successful registration on the Missouri Family Care Safety Registry as a condition of employment.
