In fulfilling this mission, the objectives of the College are: 1) To maintain and enhance quality teaching programs in its undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs; 2) To promote scholarly excellence aimed at advancing the state of knowledge in biomedical and translational research for animals and people; 3) To provide state-of-the-art patient care and diagnostic services that advance the standard of veterinary medical practice; 4) To provide post-graduate support of the profession through continuing education and consulting services; and 5) To provide outreach support to the community through public health and animal welfare initiatives. The College is committed to training the next generation of veterinarians and biomedical researchers to achieve the highest standards and to maintain and advance its international reputation.The College is comprised of four departments: Clinical Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences, and Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology. The College offers undergraduate, professional, and graduate courses of study. Two undergraduate programs offer Bachelor of Science degrees in Biomedical Sciences and Neuroscience (in conjunction with the College of Natural Sciences). The Veterinary Medical Program leads to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Department-based graduate studies lead to Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees, including three intensive professional master’s programs serving emerging needs of society.The College has long been considered one of the top veterinary schools in the country and is currently ranked second by
U.S. News & World Report . The College is fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. With over $90 million in yearly research expenditures, CVMBS faculty explore a variety of pivotal issues in human and animal health via world-renowned research programs in infectious disease, orthopedics, neuroscience, cancer biology, animal reproduction, and translational medicine. In order to provide a collective approach to patient care, CVMBS has created the Veterinary Health System (VHS) which unites the veterinary care and diagnostic services. The VHS aims to deliver the highest level of customer service, employee satisfaction, and advancements in medicine through clinical service, research and innovation.The Department of Clinical Sciences offers high-quality education programs for professional veterinary medical students, graduate veterinarians, and the public through the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital and the Johnson Family Equine Hospital. Faculty and staff are dedicated to advanced medicine, excellent teaching, compassionate care, and discoveries benefiting the health of pets and people. The Department Head of Clinical Sciences will provide leadership and oversight for over 400 faculty, residents, interns and staff, and will be responsible for creating a focus and vision for the Department.Specific responsibilities of the Department Head are to:Provide academic and scientific leadership in defining and attaining goals of the Department;Promote excellence in all departmental endeavors, and develop a culture of belonging for all in the Department;Develop a departmental leadership structure that addresses departmental needs in a comprehensive and inclusive way;Play a significant role in recruiting, hiring, and retaining faculty, and encourage mentorship for professional development and collegial interactions;Manage growth and development of the departmental missions in research, education, and service, including by leading departmental strategic planning to prioritize investment of time and resources and re-envision departmental identity;Develop innovative approaches for resourcing departmental operations and strategic plans;Serve as the primary departmental advocate in enhancing the visibility and prestige of the departmental sections and disciplines, the Department, College, and University;Represent the Department to external entities (professional and corporate organizations, alumni, etc.) and during fund-raising activities as appropriate to Department and College goals;Manage fiscal planning and administration, direct and evaluate faculty and administrative staff, oversee acquisition and maintenance of facilities and equipment, and facilitate relationships with industry and governmental entities that interact with the Department;The Department Head may have the opportunity, with the agreement of the Dean, to be involved in additional teaching, clinical, and research activities, commensurate with the applicant’s professional and academic interests.
