The City of Falls Church is seeking a qualified individual to provide leadership to the City of Falls Church Concert Band through August 2026.
The City of Falls Church Concert Band provides a medium for concert band musicians of all skill levels to pursue their musical interests and enhance their artistic growth. The band gives back to the community by providing high-quality musical performances of various types and styles that interest and entertain both performers and audiences. An entertaining mixture of marches, classical pieces, Broadway show medleys, regional tunes, and American classics are performed at concerts held at outdoor parks and indoor retirement centers in the local community. The band also regularly performs at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport to welcome veterans arriving via the Honor Flight program to our nation’s capital.
Rehearsals are usually held on Wednesday nights from 7:45 PM to 9:45 PM at Meridian High School. The band calendar includes the most up-to-date information.
The City of Falls Church Recreation and Parks Department sponsors the band, providing rehearsal space at Meridian High School, and hires and provides funding for the band director.
Responsibilities:
As the sole City employee responsible for the City of Falls Church Concert Band, the Director is responsible for ensuring the band operates in a safe and responsible manner while maintaining a positive culture where all members feel welcome.
Direct the rehearsals and performances of the band and ensure the quality and accuracy of musical pieces at the Director’s artistic discretion.
Determine the musical selections for performance at concerts and events.
Work with Event Managers to determine performance opportunities for the band.
Serve on the Executive Board of the Falls Church Concert Band.
Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited university with a degree in Music, Music Education, or Music Performance.
A minimum of five years’ experience participating in a concert band.
Experience leading a group and a strong ability to communicate and deal with the public in a professional, empathetic, and positive manner.
Extensive experience leading musical groups can be substituted for education.
Hours:
Part-time. Schedule includes weekly practices, with typically one to two performances a month.
Salary & Benefits:
Salary is $25/hour. There are no benefits.
