The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus-based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state.

Essential Job Functions:Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
The Director of Life Skills establishes departmental goals and objectives; develops guidelines, schedules, priorities and standards for achieving goals; evaluates departmental activities; develops and manages the budget; and coordinates departmental activities. Works under minimal direction with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.
Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Understanding of the facility and HHSC Rules, Policies and Procedures.
Knowledge of ICF/MR Standards and their application as well as other relevant federal and state laws and regulations.
Knowledge of Human Rights.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of public administration and management.
Skill to communicate effectively with residents, family members, coworkers and the public both orally and in writing.
Ability to use a computer including word-processing and e-mail software.
Ability to understand and comply with written and verbal instruction.
Ability to plan, organize, monitor, lead and control a department.
Ability to prioritize work.
Ability to establish and achieve goals and objectives and to devise solutions to administrative problems.
Knowledge of the Positive Performance Program.
Ability to develop and stay within a budget.

Initial Selection Criteria:Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university with a major in human service or related field in this position, plus (4) years of work experience planning, organizing, directing, controlling, or coordinating activities in a related program. Additional related work experience may substitute for the required education on a year for year basis with a maximum substitution of four (4) years. One year (18-25 semester hours) of graduate level work from an accredited college or university in a related field may substitute for the required work experience on a year for year basis.

Salary Note: The salary offered will follow HHS starting salary guidelines which are typically made at or near the minimum of the salary range.
