Position Summary
Under the direction of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology Chair, Division Physician Director and Minimally-Invasive Gynecologic Surgeons, the incumbent is a registered/certified Nurse Practitioner who provides full scope of office Gynecologic care to a new service line for The George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates. Ensures safety and health of the patient and identifies need for care. Follows established standards, procedures protocols and practices, which are developed by The George Washington University Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
include the following. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.
Responsibilities:
Participate as an integral member of the MIGS team (Minimally-Invasive Gynecologic Surgery) which currently consists of 3 Attending Surgeon MDs, 2 Fellow MDs, one Administrative Assistant, and Surgical Schedulers.
Participates in department and organizational clinical care initiatives.
Maintains BLS and MAP certification and/or MAP certification is needed.
Performs all job functions in compliance with applicable federal, state, local and company policies and procedures.
Assists the MIGS physician in the preoperative care and work-up of patients.
Provides ongoing comprehensive outpatient services in collaboration with or under the supervision of the physician.
Performs and records history and physical examination including a comprehensive pelvic exam.
Conducts preoperative patient education.
Conducts postoperative patient evaluation and education including phone calls on post-operative patients to ensure their well-being.
Performs same-day urgent post-operative visits (i.e. incision check, UTI check, vaginal cuff bleeding) when needed.
Performs urinary voiding trials in patients with acute post-operative urinary retention.
Performs telephone evaluation and advice.
Performs EMR patient messaging triage and advice for MIGS patients.
Evaluates/cares for patients with fibroids, abnormal uterine bleeding, chronic pelvic pain, endometriosis, adenomyosis, adnexal masses, post-menopausal bleeding.
Performs office procedures such as: endometrial biopsy, IUD placement and removal, Nexplanon placement and removal Foley catheter including active voiding trial.
May perform outpatient gynecologic care to include well-woman visits, contraceptive counseling, STD testing, vaginitis, other minor gynecologic problem visits.
Functions as a role model/educator to staff, medical students, PA students, and Ob/Gyn residents as assigned.
Assists with prior authorizations and peer-to-peer review for insurance denials of medications/planned surgeries.
Assists with tracking perioperative clearance for patients with chronic medical comorbidities.
Assists with compiling outside patient records for referred patients.
Assists with completion of FMLA/disability papers for post-operative patients.
Electronically renews appropriate long term medications (i.e. hormonal contraceptives, neuromodulators, NSAIDs, antifungals, etc.).
Assists/performs counseling, consenting, and collecting data for research projects as they arise.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education:
Nurse Practitioner (NP) - Must have graduated from a master's level state and NLN approved NP program and possess state licensure to practice in the expanded role.
Current license to practice professional nursing in the District of Columbia. Must possess and maintain, or be eligible for, DC DPH Controlled Substance registration and DEA registration.
Skills and Experience:
Minimum of 2 years of specialty specific and/or ambulatory experience to include acute care management. Experience with minor surgical skills, i.e., suturing, IV and I&D preferred.
Strong preference for a knowledge base and/or experience in gynecology.
