Postdoctoral Scientist - Pierson Lab - Neurogenetic IPSC Disease Modeling: Cedar

University of British Columbia, Los Angeles, California, United States, 90079

PLEASE APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE CEDARS-SINAI JOB SITE LISTED BELOW.https://jobs.cshs.org/#en/sites/CX_2001/job/6026The Pierson Laboratory is devoted to understanding the pathological mechanisms involved in pediatric neurogenetic disorders. We currently have CIRM funding for a postdoctoral researcher interested in modeling neurogenetic disorders with cerebral organoids. The position is available immediately and is for a qualified candidate ready to dedicate themselves to a 2-4 year fellowship. As a training position, there will be no H1B visa availability.NuRDopathies are a focus of the lab and we work in parallel with transgenic mouse models with our collaborator. Additional Institutional CIRM post-doctoral funding is available for new hires to apply for once a fellow. We have published several papers on NuRD-related disorders and are interested in candidates interested in neurodevelopment, gene regulation, and multi-omic approaches to study disease. The research goal of the Pierson laboratory is to model neurogenetic disease with patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells and cerebral organoids in order to understand the disease mechanisms associated with pediatric neurodevelopment and neurodegenerative disorders. Exploration of stem cell-based therapies for the delivery of therapeutic drugs, small molecules and proteins is another focus of our work. The Pierson Lab is also involved in confirming diagnoses in children with known, but rare, neurogenetic disorders through cellular modeling, as well as developing research to link unique neurological presentations with new genes and causes. Are you ready to be a part of breakthrough research?Tyler Mark Pierson, MD, PhD, has extensive experience studying neurogenetic disease using patient-derived IPSCs, molecular biology, and animal models. Tyler Pierson did his doctoral training at Baylor College of Medicine (advisor: Bert O'Malley, MD) and pediatric neurology training at CHOP/University of Pennsylvania, followed by a clinical fellowship in the Neurogenetics Branch of NINDS at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Pierson was a member of the Undiagnosed Diseases Program at the NIH. In addition to directing his laboratory, Dr. Pierson is also the director of the Pediatric Neurogenetics Clinic of Cedars-Sinai and the pediatric lead of the Cedars-Sinai Center for the Undiagnosed Patient. The Postdoctoral Scientist should have an interest in the basic science of induced pluripotent stem cells (IPSC), neurogenetic disorders, drug screening, and gene therapy. Interest in gene regulation, corticogenesis and lysosomal disorders are an added plus. The Postdoc works independently but in close cooperation and in consultation with Dr. Pierson and other Research Scientists. The Research Postdoc will be expected to develop, adapt, and implement new research techniques and protocols for these projects, as well as analyze and interpret data.Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:May assist in the preparation of grant proposals, but is not responsible for generating grant funds.May participate in publications and presentations as author or co-author.Designs and performs experiments. Will keep appropriate experimental records and documentation and analyze the results with the Principal Investigator.May develop, adapt, and implement new research techniques and protocols.Analyzes, interprets, summarizes, and compiles data.Performs routine and complex laboratory procedures throughout the training period.Operates and maintains equipment and instruments.May observe MD-patient or MD-human research subject interactions as it pertains directly to research being performed.QUALIFICATIONSEducation:Doctorate (MD, PhD, VMD, or DDS) in area directly related to field of research specialization.Experience and Skills:Acquires technical and theoretical knowledge of research projects and objectives during one to five (1-5) year post-doctoral appointments.Works independently on research projects designed by a mentor (typically the PI) within the area of specialization.Demonstrated abilities and skills to perform experimental protocols and procedures, including detailed data collection, and analysis and operation and maintenance of specialized equipment.Scheduling flexibility including evening, weekend and holiday rotation commitment may be necessary. Travel may be required.Function efficiently and cooperatively with a team of faculty, research associates, technicians, and students.Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.Knowledge of safety standards and maintenance of specialized equipment.ABOUT USCedars-SinaiCedars-Sinai is a leader in providing high-quality healthcare encompassing primary care, specialized medicine and research.
