Established by the Ohio General Assembly, The Center for Civic, Culture, and Society at Cleveland State University invites applications for the position of Director.

Vision:As defined by the enabling statute, and as an independent academic unit within Cleveland State University, the Center’s purpose is to help students to become educated and engaged citizens. To that end, the Center:Shall conduct teaching and research in the ideas, history, and texts that have shaped the American constitutional order and society;Educate students in the social sciences and humanities by means of free, open, and rigorous intellectual inquiry to seek the truth;Affirm its duty to equip students with the skills, habits, and dispositions of mind they need to engage in critical inquiry and reach their own informed conclusions on matters of social and political importance;Affirm the value of intellectual diversity in higher education and aspire to enhance the intellectual diversity of the university to the benefit of students and faculty;Affirm a commitment to create a community dedicated to an ethic of civil and free inquiry, which respects the intellectual freedom of each member, supports individual capacities for growth, and welcomes the differences of opinion that shall naturally exist in a public university community;Further Cleveland State University’s vision of a nationally recognized and student-focused public research institution that provides accessible, affordable, and engaged learning opportunities for all.

Opportunities and Responsibilities:The Director shall support faculty in developing a curriculum that will enhance the offerings in the Core Curriculum, to develop interdisciplinary offerings, and to assist the colleges and departments of the university to fulfill their respective missions by offering instruction in:The books and major debates which form the intellectual foundation of free societies, especially that of the United States;The principles, ideals, and institutions of the American constitutional order;The foundations of responsible leadership and informed citizenship.

The Director shall also be responsible for developing University-wide programming related to the values of free speech and civil discourse, and as well as expanding the intellectual diversity of the academic community.

Having the “sole and exclusive authority to manage the recruitment and hiring process and to extend offers for employment for all faculty and staff,” the Director shall hire persons of first-order qualifications for tenure-track and/or other teaching positions to accomplish the Center’s vision and objectives. The Director will serve as a faculty administrator, fulfill all university-wide obligations, and, where appropriate, participate in University governing structures and institutions.

The Director shall oversee the Center’s budget, create the internal operative structure of the Center, and shall hire sufficient staff to effectuate the Center’s goals.

The Director shall communicate the Center’s mission effectively to university colleagues, students, academic and administrative units, and to community leaders and institutions with whom Cleveland State University has an intimate and dynamic relationship.

The Director shall advance the goals of the Center by seeking support and external resources.The Director shall report directly to the President of the University or designee and shall submit an annual report to the Board of Trustees of the university and the Ohio General Assembly. The report shall provide a full account of the Center’s achievements, opportunities, challenges, and obstacles to its development.

The Director’s salary will be commensurate with his or her position, responsibilities, and qualifications.Minimum Qualifications:Terminal degree in a discipline related to the Center’s mission;Record commensurate with hiring at rank of Associate or Full Professor;Record of outstanding scholarly achievement and teaching competency;Demonstrated leadership, prudential judgment and discretion;Ability to work effectively to identify opportunities for growth and resource development;Demonstrated commitment to the Center’s legislated mission;Experience with (or potential for) curricular development and administration.Preferred Qualifications:Scholarly mastery of the history, ideas, and institutions of America’s constitutional order;Familiarity with the western tradition of political thought and leadership;Experience with budgets, organization, and staffing;Experience in navigating administrative challenges and working with colleagues from a variety of viewpoints and disciplines.Applicant Instructions:Applications will only be accepted online at
