Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Facilities Division is seeking a Lead Plant Maintenance Technician (PMT).In this role, you will oversee assigned personnel by managing daily tasks, conducting safety briefs, and inspecting work to ensure standards are met. You may represent the PMT Supervisor in meetings and provide input on staff performance appraisals. You’ll translate job requirements into specific assignments, work independently to solve problems, and develop solutions. Participation in job walks and collaboration with Facilities personnel, including Planners and Facilities Area Managers, is expected. You will assign and perform tasks using blueprints and verbal instructions from scientific staff. Additionally, you’ll update the Turnover Log at the end of each shift to ensure effective communication between shifts.You will also be responsible for completing your individual Plant Maintenance Specialist tasks as required.What You Will Do:Provide leadership including reviewing work scope, execution, and closeout. Assign daily tasks using maintenance software like Maximo, Akwire, or DataSplice, and ensure resource adequacy by reviewing the weekly schedule with the supervisor before finalizing it with the Scheduler.Conduct pre-job safety briefings to address site hazards and collaborate with the PMT Supervisor and EHS specialists to mitigate risks. Train new staff on Lab systems and equipment and support the PMT Supervisor by attending relevant meetings, sharing outcomes to ensure effective communication.Attend job walks as facilitated by Work Planners or FAMs, providing guidance and feedback. For planned work orders, obtain and relay quotes for materials to Planners and FAMs, and order parts for minor maintenance according to procurement processes.Collaborate with other Craft Leads on multi-craft jobs to ensure clarity of assignments and promote safe practices. Manage multiple projects and tasks with minimal supervision, working with Facilities Area Managers, Planners, and contractors to deliver technical expertise.Communicate technical and non-technical information effectively to various stakeholders. Utilize technical expertise to inspect and maintain critical equipment and systems, ensuring a safe and reliable facility infrastructure. Monitor Building Automation Systems and respond to alarms as necessary.Comply with health and safety policies and complete assigned training in a timely manner.Additional Responsibilities as needed:
Independently operate, maintain, and repair mechanical systems and equipment throughout the Lab. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on diverse fixed and portable equipment, and fabricate components using hand and machine tools.What is Required:Minimum of four years of work experience in the field of maintenance, plant operations, installation, or fabrication and/or completion of a recognized four-year apprenticeship program in plant maintenance and/or completion of an accredited two-year program with three years of work experience, or an equivalent combination of documentable military or industrial training and work experience.Must have a valid California Driver's License.Experience and understanding of the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of varied mechanical systems, including but not limited to fan-powered air handler systems and exhaust blowers, hydronic systems and pumps, air compressors and vacuum pumps, water heaters, and boilers.Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to organize, plan, assign, monitor, and direct the work of other team members.Demonstrated analytical skills.Distinguish colors adequately to utilize color coding.Desired Qualifications:Knowledge of LBNL Facilities layout, operations, key personnel, procedures governing procurements, safety programs, and facilities design requirements.Experience or familiarity with working in a union environment.Experience with delegating work, leading, or supervising a team.Notes:This is a full-time, career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.The hourly wage for this position is predetermined based on collective bargaining agreements set rates. The salary for this position is set at $66.84/hour.This position may be subject to a background check.
