Academic Coordinator II: Associate Chair, Department of Scripps Institution of Oceanography
Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego (http://scripps.ucsd.edu) is a world-renowned center with approximately 200 principal investigators leading research programs on all aspects of earth, ocean and atmospheric sciences. The SIO Department is responsible for development and administration of a growing suite of four undergraduate majors and three minors, a contiguous BS/MS program, two MAS programs, an MS program, and a PhD program. SIO has about 110 ladder-rank faculty, as well as Teaching Professors, Adjunct Professors, and Lecturers. SIO is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body.SIO seeks an Academic Coordinator II to serve as Associate Chair of the SIO Department. The Associate Chair will take a leadership role in developing, implementing, and sustaining new educational programs within the SIO Department. The Associate Chair will ensure the successful development and implementation of complex educational initiatives involving multiple entities that may extend across UC San Diego or include other institutions, both nationally and internationally. The successful candidate will coordinate with the Department Chair, Departmental leadership and staff, SIO leadership, the SIO faculty and students, and appropriate UCSD leadership and committees. The Associate Chair will also be responsible for coordinating SIO Departmental website, media, and communications, in collaboration with the SIO Communications Office, and SIO IT. We seek an individual who has expertise, or the willingness to develop expertise, in pedagogy, and who will work with the SIO Chair and SIO Department faculty to improve teaching and curriculum in the various programs under the Department’s purview. The Associate Chair will have supervisory responsibility of some educational support staff, and will work closely with the SIO Chair to ensure smooth functioning of the Department and its programs at all educational levels, as well as efforts to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion across SIO.
The successful candidate for Associate Chair of the SIO Department will have:
PhD or equivalent in a field of science or engineeringExcellent written and oral communication skillsExperience in initiating and implementing new programsAbility to work independently and efficientlyAbility to work well with others and motivate others to achieve goalsExcellent time-management and organizational skillsAbility to write reports and present analyses to a variety of audiencesAbility to meet deadlines
Additional preferred qualifications include:
Experience in teaching and course developmentTraining in pedagogical methods and best practicesDemonstrated strong leadership or a commitment to support diversity, equity, and inclusion in an academic setting.Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.
