Job Description

The Department of Computer Science Office of Undergraduate Programs at Virginia Tech seeks a Student Support and Program Coordinator. Working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, this position will develop, facilitate, and manage initiatives, programs, and services related to current and prospective student engagement, support, success, and recruitment related to broadening participation in computer science.

This position will lead and develop the strategy, facilitation and reporting of student support efforts related to:

• a comprehensive student success program for students minoring in one of CS' minor programs including academic advising, professional development, career exploration, and exploration learning.

• engagement and outreach efforts for current students including new student welcome events, commencement receptions, student study breaks, socials, workshops, research talks, mentoring programs, student transition information sessions, etc.

• prospective student engagement including information sessions, open houses, showcases, regional events, national conferences, college fairs, tabling events, etc.

• coordination of CS student organizations and CS Student Ambassadors including leadership opportunities, training, and community-building.

• support efforts related to student onboarding, transition, career preparation, retention and graduation.

The major areas of responsibility for this role include Student Support and Academic Advising (40%); Student Engagement and Targeted Outreach (40%); Data Request and Analysis (10%); Professional Development (5%); Administration and General Undergraduate Program Support (5%).

This position is primarily student-facing and will be housed at the Blacksburg campus of Virginia Tech with opportunities for hybrid work. This position will require periodic on-campus night and weekend work when participating in open houses and other student events.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in education, computer science, engineering, counseling, marketing or a relevant field; OR equivalent relevant experience;

• Program support experience in an academic or professional office environment;

• Experience related to student counseling, academic advising, career or professional development;

• Demonstrated experience in creating, and facilitating programming for outreach and engagement;

• Demonstrated organizational skills to accommodate multiple priorities;

• Exemplary interpersonal, communication and presentation skills with individuals and large groups;

• Demonstrated experience working effectively with a diverse population, with sensitivity to cultural and ethnic differences, including students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and prospective students and their families.

• Experience working with sensitive information and maintaining a high level of confidentiality and discretion in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in education, computer science, engineering, counseling, marketing or a relevant field or a Bachelor's degree with advanced training and work experience

• Experience strategizing, developing, facilitating, and reporting on student services in an educational setting;

• Working knowledge of academic advising pillars and standards related to academic programs and student support services;

• Experience with recruitment, admissions, or student retention initiatives;

• Knowledge, and familiarity with applications (Banner, Navigate, Canva, Microsoft Office, SLATE, etc.);

• Experience developing, planning, and executing outreach efforts, events, and other student engagement activities;

• Experience utilizing data and systems to identify audiences for targeted outreach;

• Experience with the execution of social media, marketing, and outreach campaigns;
