General Summary/Overview Statement
The Wellman Center for Photomedicine is the world's largest academic research facility dedicated to investigating the effects of light on human biology and to the development of light-mediated, minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. A pioneer in light-based biomedical research, the Center has been the source of many of the most successful transfers of this research to clinical applications.
Led by many talented and expert scientific investigators, the Center also has a strong administrative team which will be broadly managed, developed and enhanced by the Administrative Director. Together they ensure the operational and administrative services supporting the faculty, faculty laboratories and academic development of all personnel within the Center.
Receiving general direction from the Thematic Center Director and the Vice President for MGH Research, incumbent is responsible for setting administrative direction (i.e. policies and procedures, systems, etc.) and coordinating the research aspects of the Wellman Center for Photomedicine (WCP). Drawing on a broad understanding of Hospital, Harvard University, and sponsor policies and requirements, and displaying a high degree of initiative and independent judgment, the incumbent will collaborate closely with Center leadership and WCP faculty to continually assess and direct a wide range of research issues, including financial, personnel, operational, regulatory, facilities, systems, programmatic development, long-range planning and project development for the Center. In addition, the Administrative Director will collaborate with MGH, Mass General Brigham (MGB), Harvard Medical School (HMS), and other departments and organizations, e.g. MIT, aligned with the appointments of WCP faculty members. Administrative Director will also manage day-to-day operations of WCP including strategic initiatives that will enhance the mission of the Center.
Management Responsibility
Provides direct and indirect management for assigned personnel including employees in administrative, grant and other operational support roles in staff and management capacities. Direct reports presently are over 10. May provide management of other staff as needed, such as summer students. Ensures appropriate administration and supervision of staff across the Center.
Fiscal Responsibility
Leads fiscal management for Center. Includes ensuring appropriate, compliant and timely financial management of research and sundry funds. Engages in and leads prudent fiscal management of program resources (e.g. employee overtime, supplies, etc.).
Qualifications
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree required in management, finance or related discipline; Master's degree preferred.
• Minimum of 5 to 7 years of directly related management experience within research settings.
• Research or technical experience in an academic environment is a plus.
Working Conditions
Normal office conditions. May be required to attend meetings outside of regularly scheduled hours.
