Position Summary
The Department of Pediatrics at UNC Children's is recruiting a Division Chief and Regional Campus Leader to lead and expand this multispecialty children's specialty group's clinical, education, and research activities. The current Wilmington Pediatric Specialty Division is comprised of 25+ MDs, 30+ APPs, and 7+ staff members, spread across 6+ inpatient and outpatient facilities. The Division Chief and Regional Campus Leader is expected to grow the current subspecialties and volume of patients at each of these sites while expanding into further clinical settings. The leader will also liaise with the UNC SOM Wilmington Campus to provide learning and training opportunities for medical students, residents, and subspecialty fellows. UNC-Novant recently awarded capacity building grants across both institutions and the leader will be instrumental in facilitating clinical research and clinical trials in the coastal region. The Wilmington Pediatric Specialty Division is based in the large regional campus in Wilmington, NC but also staffs outreach activities and regional hospitals in the area. This division provides a wide range of essential inpatient and outpatient pediatric care services, has research and quality improvement programs, and plays a central educational role for expanding residency programs at the NC Coast. This position will be hired by University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine in the open rank, variable term track.
This multi-specialty academic practice and children's hospital is part of an innovative partnership between UNC and Novant Health to provide specialty care to children from communities throughout southeastern and coastal NC. The Novant Health - New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NH-NHRMC) facility and Betty H. Cameron Women's and Children's Hospital is a full spectrum community-based, children's hospital that serves as the tertiary care children's hospital for southeastern NC.
At NH-NHRMC, there are approximately 4500 deliveries per year and almost 3000 admissions with referrals from multiple other centers in our region. The pediatric care at NH-NHRMC includes full spectrum specialty care including hospitalists, neonatology, pediatric critical care, cardiology, neurology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, and endocrinology. The almost 80 clinicians in the group are clinically-focused but with increasing educational and research roles at a regional community children's hospital with a strong connection to a large academic group and quaternary children's hospital. Private physician groups provide pediatric specialty care in surgery, anesthesia, oral and maxillofacial surgery, radiology, and ophthalmology. There is a six-bed pediatric intensive care unit and an eighteen-bed pediatric acute care floor. This campus has expanding trainee presence including up to 60 UNC SOM medical students for 3rd and 4th years, and consideration of a pediatrics residency. The UNC-NH partnership is also making significant investments in research at the Wilmington campus.
Wilmington, NC, is a charming, coastal city of ~125,000 people located in the southeastern corner of North Carolina between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. It is a popular destination because of its moderate, four-season climate, historic preservation district, annual cultural events, and numerous championship golf courses. The historic downtown offers a 1.75-mile River walk and the nearby Wrightsville, Carolina and Kure Beaches are all within half-hour drives from downtown Wilmington.
Candidates must be BC/BE in the respective specialty and have proven leadership skills. This is a full-time faculty position, but salary benchmarks will be at private/community levels. Appointment is as a faculty member at the UNC School of Medicine Dept of Pediatrics. Time will be supported for the leadership role.
