General Function
The Department Head is responsible for administering an academic department within a college which may include and is not limited to, faculty recruitment and development, faculty evaluation, program development, program review, curriculum development, student advisement, departmental budgeting and budget control, class schedule planning, and general supervision of the teaching, research, and service and related scholarly activities of the department.
Description of Primary Duties
The Department Head leads a team of faculty responsible for undergraduate programs in Economics, Finance, General Business and Risk Management, as well as five graduate certificates in Applied Economics, Finance, Financial Analysis, Fintech and Quantitative Enterprise Risk Management. Department Faculty also contribute to the College's MBA, Executive MBA, MHA, Executive MHA programs and the General Business Program on the MSU China Campus. The Department Head supervises the administrative functions of the Department, promotes a collegial environment, teaches courses, and conducts research to maintain personal faculty qualifications per AACSB guidelines. Developing and enhancing relationships with various external constituencies is required, as is cultivating employer relationships to facilitate placement of graduates.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
The minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of school director are prescribed by the College Dean in concert with guidance from the Provost. These include: possession of a terminal degree; at least three years of successful teaching, research and service experience; evidence of leadership experience; and a demonstrated commitment to Missouri State University's inclusive excellence principles.
Additional Qualifications
An earned doctorate in economics, finance, insurance, or risk management from an AACSB-accredited institution. Applicants with an earned doctorate in a related field may be considered. An established record of scholarly research, teaching, and service appropriate for a tenured Associate or Full Professor. Excellent communication and organizational skills. Ability to interact successfully with industry. Demonstrated leadership and collegiality.
