TeleHealth Psychiatrist, Long Term Care Setting

The Telehealth Psychiatrist in a long-term care (LTC) setting provides remote psychiatric care, with a focus on managing acute mental health crises and addressing ongoing psychiatric needs of residents in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) across seven states. This role includes delivering emergency psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and assisting in the coordination of psychiatric care. The psychiatrist works closely with an interdisciplinary team, including psychiatric nurse practitioners (NPs), licensed clinical social workers (LISWs), and behavioral health care managers, to ensure high-quality, evidence-based care. This role is critical in ensuring that SNF residents have timely access to psychiatric care, particularly during emergencies, through telehealth platforms. The Telehealth Psychiatrist will be a key leader in building a sustainable, high-quality virtual behavioral health program for long-term care settings.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide virtual psychiatric evaluations, diagnose mental health conditions, and manage psychiatric medications for SNF residents. Offer consultations via secure telehealth platforms, addressing both acute psychiatric emergencies and ongoing care needs.Lead crisis interventions and emergency psychiatric assessments through telehealth, responding to acute mental health crises such as suicidal ideation, severe agitation, psychosis, or aggressive behaviors. Collaborate with on-site medical and nursing teams to ensure the safety and well-being of residents during psychiatric emergencies.Provide clinical oversight and supervision to psychiatric NPs, LISWs, and therapists delivering telehealth mental health services. Ensure that telepsychiatry interventions are aligned with evidence-based practices and regulatory requirements.Collaborate with behavioral health care managers to streamline telepsychiatry services, ensuring smooth transitions between in-person and virtual care. Assist in creating telehealth workflows that integrate with SNF operations.Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications via telehealth consultations, ensuring that residents' psychiatric medication regimens are closely monitored and adjusted as necessary. Provide medication education to on-site staff, residents, and families through virtual meetings.Ensure that all telehealth psychiatric services follow state and federal regulations, including CMS, Medicare, and telehealth-specific rules. Ensure adherence to privacy standards such as HIPAA while providing remote care.Qualifications:MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.Board-certified in Psychiatry, with a focus on geriatric or adult psychiatry preferred.Licensed to practice psychiatry in the state, may require licensure in multiple statesExperience delivering psychiatric care via telehealth platforms, particularly in managing acute psychiatric crises.Experience working in long-term care or geriatric settings is preferred.Ability to collaborate with psychiatric nurse practitioners, LISWs, and behavioral health care managers in a virtual environment.Preferred Qualifications:Familiarity with CMS, Medicare regulations related to telehealth.Experience with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems and telehealth-specific documentation practices.Expertise in emergency psychiatric care, including risk assessments and crisis intervention.Skills and Competencies:Ability to effectively use telehealth platforms for conducting psychiatric assessments, consultations, and follow-ups while ensuring a therapeutic environment.Expertise in handling psychiatric emergencies remotely, including risk assessment, de-escalation, and coordination with on-site staff to ensure immediate care.Ability to supervise and mentor psychiatric NPs, therapists, and social workers, particularly in the context of telehealth service delivery.Excellent communication skills to facilitate virtual collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, residents, and their families.Ability to adapt to the rapidly evolving landscape of telehealth in long-term care and stay updated on legal and regulatory changes.Ability to understand state regulations for involuntary psychiatric treatment
