Job Summary:The Development Officer (Discovery) will work closely with prospect research and the major gift officers to proactively discover prospects identified as having major gift capacity through our wealth screening data.This position will work with major gift prospects currently identified as discovery in portfolios to attempt to move them to cultivation. They will assist in building major gift portfolios while also making contact on behalf of major gift officers. It is a position focused on team success through proactive contact with a large number of potential donors.This will require extensive phone calling, emailing, visit scheduling, organization, real-time data entry, and follow-through. Work with team members to assist with packet creation for donor visits in preparation for each individual donor, including proposals, collateral materials, and recognition material as appropriate. Major gifts are defined as the ability to give a minimum of $10,000 over five years. This position will be required to work within the established moves management system that Columbia College has in place.In addition to major gifts, this position will also be required to make Columbia College Fund asks and Cornerstone Club asks ($1,000 unrestricted annual gift to the Columbia College Fund).
Essential Functions:
Perform job duties in accordance with Columbia College's vision, mission and values.Contribute to the overall goals of Columbia College, of the Advancement Division, and specifically, the Office of Development.Create new and contribute to existing gift portfolios, using the identification, discovery, and cultivation process in collaboration with Advancement Services and the President's Office.Master use of the NXT Data Base and have real-time data entry.Work selflessly to assist team members with existing prospects without assuming ownership of those prospects.Conduct 10 - 15 discovery meetings/calls monthly with solicitations for the annual fund and Giving Day.Work to set appointments with discovery prospects for fundraisers.Serve a proactive member of the team in order to achieve annual fundraising goals as set and communicated by leadershipWork to create and increase membership in the Cornerstone Club at a variety of levels.Tactfully move qualified major gift capacity prospects by facilitating introductions to the major gift fundraisers, working with colleagues in the Office of Development, using established processes as appropriate.As appropriate, invite prospective donors to Columbia College locations or events in locations that make sense for each donor in order to engage them towards an eventual gift. Ensure that the prospective donor is properly hosted on a case by case basis.Demonstrate refined communications skills, both verbally and in writing and represent the College and the Office of Development in a refined and professional manner at all times.Maintain collaborative communication lines with various staff and colleagues across the college to ensure a coordinated approach to prospect engagement.Arrange meetings, appointments, and other contacts for prospects with other college representatives as appropriate for cultivation and engagement purposes while not losing sight of the prospective donor.Work collaboratively with Advancement Services, Donor Relations/Stewardship, Annual Giving and Major Giving staff to achieve desired portfolio results.Understand the communication lines, internal and external protocol hierarchy.Demonstrate and maintain basic knowledge of deferred gift options, and facilitate introductions to the Planned Giving team when appropriate.Utilize Raiser Edge in "real time" to record all fundraising activity, knowing that results will be pulled from this tool for evaluation and strategy setting, appointment making, etc.Remain prepared to regularly represent Columbia College professionally to the community, the public, and colleagues. This is a front-facing position.Attend College functions as a representative of the Advancement Division as requested.Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality is required.Serve as a representative for the College in the community.Represent the College as a knowledgeable professional with a consistently positive attitude about College initiatives and leadership.Other duties as assigned.Practice superior customer service.Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned.Display respect and civility to all constituencies regardless of method of communication.Attend work timely and during the established hours of operation on a regular basis; work additional hours as business necessitates.Supervision Given:None

Certification(s):
Required experience:1-2 years of fundraising experience with demonstrated success in cultivating and closing gifts, or transferrable experience and skills desirable.
Preferred Education/Experience:
Higher education, fundraising or alumni relations experience desired.Proven exceptional customer service skills.Sales experience a plus.Expert networking ability.Experience and demonstrated knowledge of working with a capital campaign a plus.Employment Requirements:
