Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) is seeking a part-timeLife Sciences Veterinarian. VA Palo Alto operates one of the largest research programs in in the VA system, which includes a robust animal research program. The Veterinarian is a key member of the VA Research and Development Office and is responsible for managing the research animal care and use program, which includes ensuring compliance with animal welfare regulations, serving as the Clinical Veterinarian for the clinical care of the research animals and being a resource for the researchers. It is expected the Veterinarian will fulfill these responsibilities with a high standard of professional integrity and competence.
This position offers professional development opportunities to attend selected regional and national meetings on laboratory animal science and medicine.
The position requires that the individual is willing and able to work with all species of laboratory animals, BSL-1 or BSL-2+ level infectious agents, hazardous chemicals and radiation and use all appropriate safety measures in working with those agents.
The Veterinarian is expected to fill the position of Attending Veterinarian within three months of starting the position. This part-time position can potentially turn to full-time.
Located on site in Palo Alto, CA.
Part -Time Hours: 16-29 hr/wk.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary responsibility will be for the medical and surgical care oversight of all laboratory animals, including aquatic species, rodents, rabbits, and other species;Provide veterinary oversight for clinical care programs including regular consultation with researchers and their staff;On-call responsibility during evenings and weekends;Attend, perform, and advise on surgery, surgical techniques, and anesthesia;Perform veterinary review and consultation with investigators for all IACUC protocols;Develop and deliver training for vivarium staff, PI's, research staff, and members of IACUC;Write, review and update veterinary and compliance policies, guidelines, and SOP's as required;Oversee quality assurance and disease surveillance programs;Serve as the Attending Veterinarian. To fill position of Attending Veterinarian within 3 months of beginning position;Serve on the Institution's Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC);Represent the institution as appropriate at internal/external meetings and venues;Assist with special projects and duties as necessary;Participate with Research Department's Associate Chief of Staff and Administrative Officer in ongoing planning and management discussions to successfully resolve pertinent issues and challenges;Contribute to the long-range strategic planning process to develop and implement effect goals and directions for the Animal Care Program and provide information and recommendations;
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (D.V.M/V.M.D.);
The veterinarian must be licensed to practice in at least one state;Candidate must have a minimum of 5+ years' experience working in laboratory animal medicine;Candidate must be knowledgeable of applicable state, federal and local laws that regulate animal use in research;Competence in operating software programs: word processing, spreadsheets and databases;Excellent interpersonal, communication, problem solving, and analytical skills are required;Flexibility, adaptability, and negotiation acumen are key traits necessary to the position. Candidate must be a skilled communicator with ability to co laborate, supervise and motivate under stressful conditions;Candidate must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends;The final candidate will be required to successfully pass a background check;
Desired: Board certification (ACLAM).
