Job Description
MAIN FUNCTION:
A professional who acts as a resource person to the staff nurse (in the absence of the Unit Director) providing direction and support during weekends, holidays, evenings, and nights. Is responsible for upholding the Standards of the Nursing Division and the individual unit. Is responsible for the Arnot Health in general in the absence of the executive (there shall be an executive “on call” for incidents that warrant consultation). Serves as system-wide bed manager on weekends, holidays, evenings and nights. Manages IPRO denials in the absence of a Case Manager.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical
** 1. Acts as a resource person for the staff nurse, demonstrating competency in clinical judgment, selected technical skills and appropriate knowledge base.
Nursing Process
** 2. Demonstrates clinical expertise in the application of the nursing process and is a resource for the staff in its application.
Safety/Legal
** 3. Is aware of safety hazards when making rounds in the Arnot Health. Requests repairs as indicated or notifies Unit Director.
** 4. Makes rounds on all nursing units at least once per shift and is available as a resource for the staff with unusual situations with patients, family or visitors.
Budget
** 5. Assists the staff in achieving maximum productivity and efficiency during the assigned
shift. C ommittee Work
** 6. Actively participates in appropriate Division of Nursing, Medical Staff, and Arnot Health committees.
Policy
** 7. Maintains a complete understanding of the Arnot Health’s emergency procedure in regard to fire, safety, and disaster procedures; knows Clinical Supervisor’s role in fire drills, evacuation procedure, and internal/external disaster drills.
** 8. Monitors compliance with Division of Nursing and/or Arnot Health policies and gives feedback to appropriate Unit Directors.
Standards
** 9. Is aware of all generic standards. Is able to reference specific standards.
JCAHO/NYSDOH
** 10. Demonstrates a working knowledge of JCAHO/NYSDOH standards as applied to the Arnot Health environment; acts as a resource for staff.
Quality Improvement
** 11. Actively participates in the Division of Nursing Quality Improvement Program. Practices quality in daily work.
Performance Appraisal
** 12. Handles serious problems immediately, and communicates with Unit Director. Works with the Unit Director in doing performance appraisal of permanent weekend or off-shift employees.
** 13. Refers appropriate situations to Assistant Vice President and/or Executive on-call.
Staff Development
** 14. Assesses educational needs of staff and communicates such to Unit Directors.
** 15. Promotes professional growth of the staff nurse.
** 16. Demonstrates awareness of self-learning needs and seeks ways to meet these.
Communication
** 17. Develops and maintains effective communication with staff, physicians, patients/families, and between the unit and other departments.
** 18. Inspires confidence from physicians, patients, visitors, and other staff members by performing and consistently communicating in a professional manner. Keeps the appropriate individual in the communication loop.
Working Relationships
** 19. Develops and maintains effective working relationship with the staff nurse, Unit Directors, Assistant Vice President/Nursing and other members of the health team.
** 20. Demonstrates a willingness to work with other Clinical Supervisors in a positive way to assure coverage of shifts and completion of assigned projects.
Leadership
** 21. Is able to delegate and coordinate effectively.
** 22. Acts as a resource person for staff nurse, assisting in development of leadership skills.
** 23. Performs competently in new situations and in emergencies.
Problem Solving
** 24. Consistently demonstrates the ability to assess a situation from a variety of perspectives, considers alternatives, and assists staff in choosing appropriate course of action.
Research
** 25. Remains aware of current nursing research and implements findings in nursing practice as applicable.
Other
Provides age specific appropriate care to patient according to their age groups for the particular unit to which the individual is assigned.

EDUCATION:
BSN required or completion within a negotiated time frame. Certification in nursing specialty or nursing administration preferred. Holds permit or license to practice nursing in the State of NY. Meets Arnot Health employment criteria.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 5 years clinical experience.
CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:
Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days of hire date.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Appreciable physical effort required. Moving, lifting and assisting patients whose size and physical abilities can vary greatly. Some lifting, reaching, and stooping. Required to be on feet much of the time.

Category I. Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.
