Position Summary:
The Director, Future Fuels, will lead the strategic development, implementation, and management of sustainable fuel initiatives for our cruise ship fleet. This role is critical in driving the company’s transition to low-carbon and net zero-emission fuels, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and enhancing the overall sustainability of our operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Strategic Leadership:
- Develop and execute a comprehensive strategy for the adoption of future fuels, aligned with the company’s sustainability goals.
- Conduct thorough market analysis to identify emerging trends, technologies, and partnerships in the sustainable fuels sector.
- Lead cross-functional teams to evaluate and integrate new fuel technologies into the fleet.
- Technical Expertise:
- Provide technical guidance on the feasibility, performance, and integration of alternative fuels such as biogenic and e-fuels.
- Oversee fuel trials and testing programs to ensure safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
- Collaborate with naval architects and engineers from both Newbuild and Marine Operations to design and retrofit ships for new fuel technologies.
- Regulatory Compliance:
- Monitor and interpret global environmental regulations related to maritime fuels and emissions.
- Ensure all fuel-related operations comply with international standards and local regulations.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies and industry associations to advocate for favorable policies and practices.
- Sustainability Reporting:
- Develop and manage metrics to track progress towards fuel sustainability goals.
- Prepare and present regular reports to senior management and stakeholders on the status of fuel initiatives.
- Contribute to the company’s sustainability reports and public disclosures.
- Stakeholder Engagement:
- Build and maintain strong relationships with fuel suppliers, technology providers, research institutions, and industry partners.
- Represent the company at industry conferences, workshops, and forums on sustainable fuels.
- Communicate the company’s fuel strategy and progress to internal and external stakeholders.
Financial Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the oversight of the future fuel operational expenses in collaboration with Marine Operations finance and Supply Chain departments
- Strategizes with financial and accounting teams on economic feasibility analysis for project options, alternatives, and life cycle costs.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field; a Master’s degree or higher is preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in the maritime, energy, or environmental sectors, with a focus on fuel technology and sustainability.
- Proven track record in developing and implementing alternative fuel strategies.
- In-depth knowledge of maritime fuel regulations and sustainability practices.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.
- A proven track record of leadership in developing and implementing decarbonization fuel strategies, preferably within the maritime or cruise industry.
- In-depth knowledge of sustainable practices, emerging technologies, and regulatory frameworks related to decarbonization.
- Ability to translate complex issues into actionable plans.
- Experience managing cross-functional teams and driving organizational change towards sustainability.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Strong leadership skills and proven experience in leading a medium to large size team of professionals.
- Solid written and verbal communications skills; particularly within a multicultural environment. Clear and precise communication with all levels of the organization are essential.
- Strong ability to interact with senior management team and build effective relationships within the company as well as with internal and external customers.
- Strong planning capabilities to identify and prioritize strategies and activities as well as to meet the deadlines required to support the overall business needs. Exceptional interpersonal, communication and listening skills, including the ability to adjust style to successfully implement ideas across the business/ships and effectively interact with external and internal channels.
- Strong decision-making skills considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
- Creativity and strategic thinker.
- Detail oriented with excellent analytical, financial and spreadsheet modeling skills.
- Must possess knowledge of the hospitality industry, current market trends, and economic factors; preferably within an international organization and accustomed to working with a highly diverse and remote work group.
- Understanding of advanced Engineering concepts, design theories and technical drawings necessary to assist in special project and dry dock planning.
- Excellent organization and presentation skills.
- Solid understanding of accounting rules for expense and capital activities.
- Software: Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, and Project required.
- Internal candidates: Knowledge of AMOS, Lotus Notes Database, the CAR process, budget, approval, reconciliation and reporting.
- Language requirements: Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific, engineering, and technical journals, business periodicals, financial reports, legal documents, and government regulations. Ability to clearly and effectively present information to top management and public groups.
