Software Engineer - AI & Machine Learning
Brightwave, New York City, NY, United States
?? About Brightwave
Brightwave is a deep technology startup building LLM-powered investment research systems that can autonomously reason across huge bodies of multimodal text, table and image data such as SEC filings, real-time news feeds, earnings call transcripts, legal rulings, patents, sell-side analysis and more. Brightwave helps active asset managers accelerate research workflows and generate investment ideas with unprecedented depth and comprehensiveness. Brightwave is experiencing rapid growth and commercial success, with paying customers with assets under management in excess of $120B and brisk demand from diverse clients across financial services.
??? Create Something Incredible
We hire exceptional humans who are intrinsically motivated to do great work. As a principle we tend to favor a smaller team of senior, seasoned professionals who intuitively know what needs to happen next. Brightwave's team includes engineers from places like Databricks and Meta, NeurIPS-published research scientists, and commercial talents with tours of duty at firms like Goldman Sachs, UBS and McKinsey.
Our venture investors include some of the world's largest asset managers as well as angels from OpenAI, Databricks, Uber, LinkedIn and the Solana Foundation.
AI & Machine Learning Engineering at Brightwave
At Brightwave, AI/ML Engineers work closely with our CTO and CEO to build and deploying diverse, high-precision language model and machine learning technologies in a production environment. Our ideal candidate has experience not just in training models, but also in deploying and iteratively improving them in real-world systems.
This is a creative R&D role that blends algorithmic insight, engineering acumen and strong product sense to conceive and execute on AI-powered user experiences that meet the needs of sophisticated finance professionals.
Responsibilities
- Design, fine-tune, and serve large language models (LLMs) and other machine learning models in a live production environment.
- Design, fit and serve embedding models that support core functionalities such as search relevance and personalized recommendations.
- Build and maintain robust ETL pipelines to prepare and process data for training and deploying machine learning models.
- Implement best practices for model evaluation, using statistically sound methods to continuously improve model performance.
- Design and implement scalable APIs to enable our AI and ML systems to integrate seamlessly into broader product workflows.
- Build and maintain systems that construct and enhance high-accuracy knowledge graphs.
Capabilities
Brightwave seeks engineers who are passionate about production-scale AI/ML systems. Strong candidates will have some (but not necessarily all) of the following capabilities. At Brightwave, we grow together.
- 7+ years of experience in software engineering; 3+ years of experience in machine learning / deep learning roles.
- M.S. or Ph.D. in machine learning, computer science, statistics or related domain.
- Experience building, fine-tuning, and serving machine learning models in production environments. This is not a research or pure modeling role - if it isn't running in prod it may as well not exist.
- Extensive working experinece with tools like Hugging Face, PyTorch, sentence-transformers, sklearn, etc.
- Strong grounding in deep learning, classical machine learning techniques, and statistical analysis, with experience applying them to complex, large-scale datasets.
- Practical experience building personalized recommendation engines or similar algorithms (e.g., feed personalization, search ranking) in a consumer web environment.
- Expertise in data engineering workflows, including constructing and maintaining ETL pipelines for machine learning tasks.
- Experience designing APIs that efficiently support the integration of machine learning models into broader systems.
Values Matter
We stay true to our values, and work with people who do the same.
- Ownership. We take responsibility for how we choose to respond to our circumstances.
- Humility. Most situations warrant a sense of curiosity and a willingness to be wrong.
- Craftsmanship. We take pride in the work and tend to the details.
- Focus. Transformative work only happens in the presence of intense, sustained focus.
- Empathy. Seek first to understand - most people are basically reasonable and want to do the right thing.
- Humor. Life is a gift, let’s enjoy it together.
