The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking an experienced and dynamic Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. This role involves providing psychiatric services with a focus on psychopharmacology for Medical/Surgical inpatients and outpatients. Responsibilities include conducting psychiatric consultations and urgent diagnostic evaluations, overseeing a caseload of medically ill patients with co-occurring mental illness, addiction disorders, developmental disabilities, and other special needs, maintaining clinical records, and collaborating on treatment plans. The practitioner will also instruct students, residents, and other professionals, lead interdisciplinary treatment teams, perform necessary documentation for guardianships, DMH eligibility, and disability evaluations, and support the Ambulatory Care Clinic, including the Office-Based Opiate Treatment (O.B.O.T.) Clinic. /_Hours:_/ 8:30AM-5:00PM Monday-Friday with Saturday and Sunday Off. Covers 4 weekends and one Holiday per year. / _Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):_ // / * /Perform psychiatric evaluations for inpatients and outpatients upon consultation request./ * /Order and evaluate lab and diagnostic tests to determine mental health or behavioral disorders; formulate and communicate treatment plans to the requesting physician./ * /Prescribe/recommend medications to treat mental illness and enhance psychosocial and vocational functioning./ * /Assess patients' capacity for informed consent for medications; take legal action if capacity is in question./ * /Consult collaboratively with the DPH psychiatrist for complex cases./ * /Collaborate with other staff for comprehensive patient treatment./ * /Lead interdisciplinary teams in treating and caring for inpatients, including managing assaultive/abusive behaviors./ * /Respond to psychiatric emergencies in the DPH areas./ * /Consult with legal personnel regarding patients' competency and guardianship needs./ * /Provide timely evaluations for disability and guardianship proceedings./ * /Maintain accurate patient records in the accepted LSH format./ * /Integrate current psychopharmacology literature and research into practice./ * /Instruct students, residents, and professionals in inpatient & outpatient consultation psychiatry./ * /Attend meetings and educational forums to exchange information about behavioral health treatment./ * /Maintain ongoing communication with patients' attending physicians and healthcare providers./ * /Act as a liaison to other programs as assigned./ * /Conduct meetings or conferences to exchange information, formulate policies, and resolve problems./ * /Establish and maintain liaison with community groups, service agencies, and professionals./ * /Provide clinical consultation to interdisciplinary mental health providers./ * /Prepare and deliver up to four lectures or case conferences annually./ * /Use standard hospital communication mechanisms for all LSH-related issues./ * /Participate in Physician Compliance Education coding, medical record documentation, and Meditech processes./ * /Complete monthly Time and Effort studies per CMS regulations./ * /Submit weekly Time Sheets to the hospital./ * /Refrain from professional billing at LSH except for services related to the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital Physicians Group./ * /Sign and return a Physician Allocation Agreement annually./ * /Qualify for and maintain LSH Medical Staff privileges./ / _Required Qualifications:_ // / * /Knowledge of the principles and practices of psychiatric nursing./ * /Recognize the types and symptoms of mental and/or emotional disorders./ * /Identify the types and characteristics of drugs used in providing behavioral health care./ * /Distinguish symptoms of mental and/or emotional disorders./ * /Apply the theory and practice of Community Health Nursing./ * /React swiftly in emergency situations./ * /Build rapport with persons from varied ethnic, cultural, and/or economic backgrounds./ * /Interact effectively with people under physical and/or emotional stress./ / _Preferred Qualifications:_ / * /Understand the theories, principles, and practices of nursing./ / _About the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital:_ / Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital’s services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity. Located in the heart of Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients. The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients.
