What You’ll Do
The Cloud Data Enablement team is looking for a Principal Application Engineer who is passionate about building products that help Discover achieve the next level of growth in Data Analytics. An engineer in this role develops and maintains backend solutions to fit business needs. This requires back-end (APIs), and database development. As the lead engineer, you will be responsible for architecture, design and implementation of reliable infrastructure services on AWS.
An engineer in this role works independently or with the team to innovate and advocate for best practices within the team. Primary responsibilities include working with the product team to architect complex solutions across large cross-functional enterprise teams, troubleshooting production issues, designing complex solutions and delivering code from development through production, updating/enhancing current products, automation of support processes and documentation.
The ideal candidate must be detail oriented, have superior verbal and written communication skills, strong organizational skills, able to juggle multiple tasks at once, able to work independently and can maintain professionalism under pressure. You must be able to identify problems before they happen and implement solutions that detect and prevent outages. You must be able to accurately prioritize projects, make sound judgments, work to improve the user experience.
How You’ll Do It
Creates technology solutions addressing high impact business priorities. Demonstrates the ability to analyze, design, code, test and deploy solutions and product features with high quality to production. Level of technical expertise enables solutions with high complexity and depth.
Competent in multiple technical domains, including programming languages, security, automation, testing, and business domains. As a result, is the go-to person for many people outside of their team.
Participates in strategic technology decisions and understands how these decisions impact Discover as a whole.
Proactively identifies and mitigates issues based on intuition and experience in multiple domains. Is a thought leader amongst team members and drives problem solving to determine root cause.
Coaches technology communities at Discover in areas of specific technology domain, design-thinking, agile software development way of working, security, architecture and/or data engineering.
Qualifications You’ll Need
The Basics
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Informatics, Information Security, Information Technology, or related.
6+ years of experience, in Information Technology, (Software) Engineering, or related.
Internal applicants only: technical proficiency rating of proficient on the Dreyfus engineering scale
Physical And Cognitive Requirements
Primarily remain in a stationary position.
No required movement about the work environment to complete the major responsibilities of the job.
Primarily performed indoors in an office setting.
Ability to operate office equipment such as but not limited to computer, telephone, printer, and calculator.
Ability to communicate verbally.; Ability to communicate in written form.
Bonus Points If You Have:
Experience contributing to the architecture and design (architecture, reliability and scalability) on new and current systems.
Experience developing, deploying and maintaining large-scale Cloud-native solutions.
Experience developing and implementing API service architecture
Experience in Python FastAPI, Flask framework.
Strong experience of developing multi-threaded and synchronization application
Build secure web applications with user authentication
Understanding of software testing principles and methodologies
Hands on experience with AWS services
Experience building data pipelines to ingest data into data lake.
Experience as part of an Agile engineering or development team
Strong understanding of object-oriented principles with an ability to write clean code
Strong experience working with a relational database and NoSQL database
Strong experience with CI/CD pipelines with Jenkins or similar; Git/GitHub; Artifactory, OpenShift, Docker
Proven skills in high availability and scalability design, as well as performance monitoring
Understanding of messaging systems like MQ, Rabbit MQ, Kafka, or Kinesis.
Experience with relational databases such as Postgres and understanding of columnar data stores such as Redshift or Snowflake
Strong technical understanding of data architecture, data quality and related technologies

The base pay for this position generally ranges between $104,000.00 to $175,600.00. Additional incentives may be provided as part of a market competitive total compensation package.
