Job Summary:
Provide administrative, logistics, and communications related duties in support of the Park Center for Independent Media (PCIM) and its director. Assist in preparation of articles on independent media for PCIM website, maintain financial records, and conduct public communications. Coordinate details for public events, conferences, guest speakers, and student/faculty initiatives both on and off campus as needed, including the annual Izzy Awards ceremony each spring. Coordinate public presentations and serve as liaison to campus offices and relevant outside organizations. Aid in the assimilation of data, financials and budgetary matters, and preparation of reports related to PCIM. Assist in overseeing the annual student internship program supported by PCIM. It is anticipated that the job will entail working, on average, 20-25 hours a week for 40 weeks a year, with the schedule to be determined by the director.
Job Responsibilities:Facilitate planning related to the growth, impact, and future of independent media that will culminate in PCIM policy and related publications, including online.Help maintain and update the PCIM website and oversee students who assist PCIM with developing content for outreach on social media platforms, more specifically for YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter) among others.Assist in preparation, research, writing and review of articles and reports for PCIM website with the director and other advisory faculty as needed and help develop a plan to integrate PCIM with a broader coalition of independent journalists and critical media scholars.Work with director in conceptualizing, planning, and executing symposia on independent media and media literacy; develop and maintain a speaker series on campus each semester for hybrid streaming events and webinars, including for the annual Izzy Awards each spring.Engage in the planning and coordination of events, programs, conferences, guest speakers, Izzy Award judges, and student/faculty initiatives, including travel accommodations and other financial/budgetary matters.Facilitate and maintain an up-to-date database of PCIM contacts, subscriptions, and potential guest speakers.Communicate and work with various independent media organizations for the PCIM.Perform public relations activities coordinating interviews and public presentations for the director to enhance the Center's national profile.Assist in the coordination of summer Independent Media Internship program; serve as liaison to organizations in outreach and planning internships for students, and to ensure communication between the director, students, and faculty.Develop and demonstrate multicultural awareness and contribute to cultivating an inclusive, diverse, and respectful college community. Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students, and visitors to the college. Promote a flexible, collaborative, and inclusive work and living environment and engage in educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.Provide administrative support and assimilate information for the financial needs of PCIM. Monitor, verify and reconcile expenditures of budgeted funds in Ithaca College's financial system; verify and maintain all travel forms and documentation; maintain budget files. Provide updated information, data and reports as required or requested. Process financial transactions, pay bills, and process credit card payments as needed.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in journalism, politics, or related area is preferred; minimum of 2 years of academic research and/or academic writing or related professional experiences; familiarity with independent news media outlets in the United States; excellent attention to detail and verbal and written skills; ability to learn and follow Ithaca College systems and protocols necessary for the operation of PCIM; basic knowledge of website maintenance and database tools; financial records keeping and budgetary oversight skills. The ideal applicant will have strong collective skillsets and experience in all the job responsibilities as defined, especially in planning and logistics, public communications on campus and online, and specific experience supporting academic and public events related to independent journalism.
Work Environment:
Work is expected to be carried out both on campus and off in a hybrid work model. Presence on campus will be required a minimum of two days a week with an office next to the director, especially for regular coordination of meetings of the Center. Participation in and presence at all PCIM events is mandatory. Occasionally, the incumbent may need to travel within or outside the Ithaca area.
