A Brief Summary of This Position:
The Lean Engineer at Valmont drives operational excellence by applying Lean principles to improve processes and mentor teams across departments. This role involves leading efforts in process optimization, change management, and performance tracking, while also supporting production, quality, and reliability initiatives. The Lean Engineer uses value stream mapping to identify areas for improvement, develop action plans, and implement solutions, ensuring best practices are shared across the organization to enhance agility, simplicity, and customer focus.
Essential Functions:
Strong problem-solving skills and experience with structured problem-solving tools such as 8D, RCCM, 5 why, RCA Facilitate and coordinate Lean events such as value stream mapping, Kaizen events, 5S, JIT, root cause analysis
Use strong analytical skills, including statistical analysis, to identify waste and opportunities for improvement. Familiarity with tools like Minitab
Use and maintenance of Obeya board for project management
Lead teams in the development and improvement of business processes, architecture, requirements, change management, and metrics
Promote and facilitate diagnosis of work flow impediments and other waste throughout the Division and provide counsel on appropriate tools to eliminate them
Development and maintenance of standard processes for measuring and reporting the status of, and improvements in, Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost (SQDC) metrics
Represent Irrigation’s lean team on cross-divisional committees
Define and facilitate improvement activities based on the ‘Plan-Do-Check-Act/Adjust’ (PDCA) methodology with adherence to all global and local lean standards
Drive improvement in, and quality of, relevant discipline standards and practices to continually increase the value to the customer
Proven track record of leading large-scale Lean initiatives and managing significant process improvement projects
Champion Lean learning and use of effective tools to improve the business, measure success, and deliver Lean process improvement results
Guide and coach both direct and cross-functional teams in Lean principles, while training and developing Lean competencies in junior engineers and other staff.
This position reports to the Irrigation and Tubing Lean Excellence Manager and has no direct reports
This role requires up to 25% travel (domestically), including overnight stays
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field
One year of engineering experience with a focus on Lean or continuous improvement, which may include internships
Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and program management, including best practices in strategy deployment and project execution
Ability to travel up to 25% of the time domestically
Flexibility in working hours to train and coach off-shifts
Broad knowledge of materials, costs, techniques, and processes in manufacturing
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
Competent in performing mathematical calculations relevant to Lean methodology, including basic algebra and statistical analysis
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:
Proven facilitation/coaching of TPM events, Standard Work events, SMED events, RCAs, manufacturing, and administrative value stream improvement projects is preferred
PMP (Project Management Professional) Certification is preferred
Professional Lean Certification preferred
Proficiency in Minitab, Visio, PowerBI, and PowerApp preferred
Bilingual capabilities preferred
