General Summary

The Survey Coordinator reports to the Survey Manager. The Survey Coordinator coordinates, trains, and supervises skilled personnel performing all phases of land surveying.  This position possesses strong organizational, time management and supervisory abilities, including the ability to make independent field decisions.

The Survey Coordinator establishes and maintains effective interpersonal relationships at all organizational levels and with the public. Under general supervision, this position exercises project leadership overcomplex projects and trains other professionals. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities  These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.  May perform other duties as assigned.

  • Supervise field surveys, prepare, and certify survey plats, including right of way, easement and property surveys.
  • Read, interpret, and prepare metes and bounds descriptions.
  • Supervise horizontal and vertical control surveys, construction staking and field layout of projects for the Department of Watershed Management and other City of Atlanta departments. This requires extensive knowledge of surveying, engineering, and construction methods.
  • Performs and interprets property research, including deeds, records of surveys, parcel maps, property descriptions as well as historical plats, plans and survey notes. 
  • Operates and supervises others using surveying instrumentation and software, including levels, transits, total stations, electronic distance measuring devices, Global Positioning System survey equipment and AutoCAD. Make complex survey calculations to derive data. 
  • Aids the Survey Services Project Manager and Support Services Manager on daily operations. 
  • Provides technical advice and supervision to daily field activities and assists in the timely completion of assigned projects.
  • Works with project engineers to determine desired survey product and selects proper surveying techniques and equipment to accomplish the task.

 Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Knowledge of Land Surveying and Engineering terminology; knowledge of city ordinances, state and federal regulations relating to Land Surveying; knowledge of preparation and review of reports.
  • Good organizational and communication skills; advanced computer software skills; skill in the use of basic hand tools; skilled in operating all survey tools.

  • Has managerial authority over a group of professional employees and/or a group of professional, technical, or administrative employees with multiple intermediate supervisors and/or team leaders.
