Job Description

Uses appropriate physical therapy evaluation treatment directed toward relieving patient pain and/or restoring function. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior. Works under the direction of the Director of Rehabilitation Therapy Services, Rehabilitation Therapy Coordinator, or designee who reviews work for conformance with Medical Center policies and procedures. Receives clinical direction from the Rehabilitation Therapy Coordinator. May exercise partial supervision over a small number of physical therapist assistants and trainers.

Responsibilities

Effectively administers physical therapy evaluation techniques and interprets findings according to standardized or recommended guidelines. Takes into consideration medications and their impact upon cognitive/functional activity level.Establishes measurable and functionally based treatment goals consistent with physician orders. Evaluates findings and receives input from patient and/or family members.Develops care plans utilizing current clinical practices, techniques, and procedures. Appropriately selects therapeutic interventions which effectively achieves desired outcomes. Makes changes and/or intervenes as necessary in response to patient reaction to treatment.Delegates appropriately to assistants and trainers. Consults, reviews records, and provides education to supervised individuals in performance of assignments.Routinely assesses patient and family learning needs, barriers to goal achievement, and patient risk factors. Documents educational interventions and/or patient referrals per departmental standards.Documents and communicates as necessary with referring physicians and team members results of patient evaluations, progress/reaction to therapy, and discharge recommendations/summary in timely manner and in accordance to Medical Center standards.Ensures documentation is legible, complete, well organized, and meets third party payer mandates. Maintains current knowledge of reimbursement issues related to delivery of physical therapy.Complies with all professional and ethical practice guidelines.Actively participates in departmental improvement activities. Contributes realistic feedback and insight into improving quality relative to patient care, visitors, and referral sources in line with budgetary constraints.Identifies own education needs. Seeks to improve skill and knowledge through appropriate continuing education and/or professional organization involvement. Shares knowledge. Participates in departmental education and in-service programs.Participates as clinical instructor for physical therapy or physical therapist assistant students as appropriate.Manages daily work assignments and meets productivity expectations. Schedules appropriate amount of time for patient evaluations, patient care, and documentation.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited school of Physical Therapy.Some experience desirable.Considerable knowledge of modern principles, methods, and materials of physical therapy.Ability to assess and treat patients and also lead supportive personnel in performing treatment.Familiarity with common medications and their impact on patient function.Demonstrated technical understanding and skilled proficiency in performance of work as evidenced through competency assessment. Demonstrated ability to develop plans of patient care.Knowledge of reimbursement related to delivery of physical therapy.NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Licensure to practice as a Physical Therapist in the State of Michigan.NOTE: Current certification by the NATA Board of Certification may be required for some positions. McKenzie/MedX certification or eligibility may be required for some positions.
