General Summary :

The LEAP Head Coach is responsible for helping each participating student achieve a high level of skill, an appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship, and an increased level of self-esteem. The LEAP Head Coach reports to the Middle School LEAP Liaison and The Varsity Head Coach.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Administrative Responsibilities

Responsible with LEAP Liaison and Varsity Head Coach for all matters relating to the organization, administration and philosophy of the sport under his/her direction.

Serves as primary point of contact and communication for his/her sport within the middle school community.

Has an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the LEAP mission, values and goals as outlined in the LEAP Handbook.

Supports LEAP mission, values and goals in his/her actions and words.

Acts as a positive role model on and off the court/field/site, etc.

Coaches individual participants in the skills necessary for development in the sport involved.

Maintains competency in rules, interpretations, procedures, techniques, and general information about all aspects of the sport.

Maintains the highest level of communication with parents and athletes and responds to all communication from the LEAP Office in a timely manner.

Where appropriate, utilizes common evaluation rubric to direct tier placement for individual participants.

Where appropriate, collaborates with varsity head coach and helper coaches to determine equitable distribution of participants to ensure the creation of balanced teams.

Communicates any unique, unusual, and/or confrontational events with the LEAP Liaison and LEAP Director in a timely fashion.

2. Supervisory Duties

Assist LEAP Liaison and Varsity Head Coach in recruiting helper coaches.

Collaborate with Varsity Head Coach to fully utilize helper coaches in the implementation of practice plan to expose all athletes to opportunities to achieve skill development milestones.

3. Record Keeping Responsibilities

Maintain an accurate and current roster of each team and coaching assignment-share this information with parents, LEAP Liaison, and LEAP Office.

Consult with LEAP Liaison to ensure that all participants have current physical on file and that copies of all physicals are available to helper coaches at all times.

Take inventory of all equipment to be used before the start of season and collect all equipment at the conclusion of season.

Develop a consistent and positive communication procedure to keep parents informed of program functions/schedules and changes.

Ensures that only students that are registered and have paid participate.

3. Athletic Behavior/Participant Expectation Responsibilities

Shares the 5 expectations of all LEAP Participants (Attend all scheduled practices and competitions, Give best effort at all times, Conduct self in sportsmanlike fashion at all times, Treat teammates with respect, and Have fun) with participants and parents.

Enforces discipline and sportsmanlike behavior at all times, and establishes and oversees penalties for breach of such standards by individual students.

Ensures that no hazing takes place in his/her sport.

4. Injury/Safety

Cooperates with LEAP Liaison to verify that no participant is allowed to practice/compete without a physical on file at the middle school.

Oversees the safety condition of the facility or area in which assigned sport is conducted.

Enforces rules and regulations concerning conditioning of athletes and their health and safety.

Reports any serious injuries to the LEAP Liaison in a timely fashion and completes incident report when necessary.

Exercises great care in dealing with injuries and particularly those that are of a serious nature. In all cases, the coach should assure that the injured athlete receives competent care. Following injuries of a serious or prolonged nature, the coach should secure the signed approval of the doctor and parent before the athlete is allowed to participate again.

Ensures that practice and/or competition site is left in the same shape they found it.

5. Team Activities

Collaborates with helper coaches to ensure that practice planning follows the direction of the Head Varsity Coach with the exposure to opportunities for mastery of critical skills as the highest priority.

Communicates with parents and athletes in terms of criteria for team placement, team placement decisions, schedules for practices and games.

6. Other duties as required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

Experience in teaching, coaching, or youth development is preferred.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Organizational skills.

Understanding of LEAP mission, values, and goals.

Ability to follow direction of Varsity Head Coach of the specific sport.
