About Madrigal: Madrigal is a biopharmaceutical company pursuing novel therapeutics for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), also known as metabolic dysfunction associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Our first therapy, Rezdiffra (resmetirom), was granted accelerated approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of adults with NASH with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis (consistent with stages F2 to F3 fibrosis) and is being studied in a Phase 3 trial for the treatment of NASH with compensated cirrhosis.

Role Overview: The Director of Payroll is responsible for overseeing and managing the end-to-end payroll operations for our US and expanding global workforce. This role requires deep expertise in both US and international payroll (specifically the EU), strong knowledge of compliance requirements, and experience managing complex payroll functions, including leading internal teams and managing relationships with external payroll service providers. This position reports to the Controller and will play a key role in ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing, tax compliance, and overall payroll system optimization.

Position Responsibilities: Global Payroll Management: Oversee payroll operations across the US, EU, and other regions, ensuring timely and accurate processing of payroll for global employees. Systems Management: Administer and optimize payroll systems, with a focus on Workday and ADP, ensuring seamless integration between HR, finance, and accounting systems. Third-Party Providers: Manage relationships with multiple external payroll vendors, ensuring high levels of service, accuracy, and cost-effectiveness for both US and international payroll operations. Compliance & Tax Filings: Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll laws in the US, as well as employment and tax regulations across EU countries and other regions as the company expands. Oversee accurate filing of payroll taxes and ensure adherence to all reporting requirements. Process Improvement: Identify and implement best practices for payroll processing and controls to streamline operations and improve efficiency across the organization. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with the HR, finance, legal, and accounting teams to ensure alignment of payroll with employee data, compensation changes, benefits, and tax requirements. Audits & Reporting: Lead payroll audits, both internal and external, providing necessary documentation and ensuring payroll compliance. Prepare and analyze payroll reports for senior management, identifying key insights and trends. Expansion Strategy: Support the company’s international expansion by developing payroll strategies and processes that ensure compliance with local regulations and scalability for new regions. GDPR Compliance: Ensure compliance with GDPR and other relevant data protection regulations for employees in the EU as it relates to payroll. Experience: Bachelor’s Degree (BA/BS) in related field Minimum of 8-10 years of progressive experience in payroll management, with at least 5 years in a management role managing both US and international payroll-specifically EU and other regions outside the US. Demonstrated expert knowledge of payroll laws, tax requirements, and compliance in both the US and EU. Proven experience leading teams and working with third-party payroll providers like-ADP and Workday; experience with Workday HRIS and ADP Payroll is strongly preferred. Experience in the biotech/pharma industry in a fast scale up environment of 750+ employees strongly preferred Expert understanding of global payroll compliance requirements, including US state and labor laws, GDPR, and EU-specific payroll regulations. Experience supporting large field staff preferred Demonstrated ability to combine attention to detail with big picture perspective, operationalizing via excellence in project management and effectively managing multiple projects/priorities. Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on process improvement, automation, and accuracy in payroll operations. Compensation: Base salary is determined by several factors that include, but are not limited to, a successful candidate's qualifications, skills, education, experience, business needs, and market demands. The role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, and comprehensive benefits, which include flexible paid time off (PTO), medical, dental, vision, and life and disability insurance.
