40Cost Center:This position may have a signing bonus available; a member of the Recruitment Team will confirm eligibility during the interview process.Responsibilities:Codes and abstracts Medicare and Commercial inpatient records to include relevant clinical and demographic information.Assigns correct DRG in accordance with UHDDS guidelines.Assigns correct ICD-10-CM diagnosis/PCS procedure codes in accordance with established guidelines.Selects correct Medicare and All Patient Groupers according to primary payor.Maintains DRG and coding accuracy rate of not less than 97% for optimal reimbursement.Performs correct sequencing according to coding guidelines.Ensures proper documentation is present to substantiate codes assigned.Uses SoftMed, Soarian Clinicals, Soarian Financials, and EDM systems proficiently to perform job functions.Resolves reimbursement issues with Patient Accounts on a daily basis.Clarifies Physician Orders with Case Managers to ensure patient status and charges are correct prior to coding encounter.Accurately assigns/corrects discharge disposition status based on clinical documentation to ensure proper reimbursement.Participates in quarterly UMASS Coding Compliance Audit. Participates in Permedion and Blue Cross audits. May be required to perform written rebuttal, claim correction and attendance in preliminary exit meeting.Attends Hospital intradepartmental meetings at the request of Coding Supervisor or HIS Director.Runs daily reports to ensure all outstanding encounters are coded.Maintains professional licensure(s) through Continuing Education Units required by AHIMA.Meets established productivity standards.Facilitates and promotes the sharing of knowledge and content throughout departments.Takes responsibility for ensuring that all work outcomes satisfy the UMass Memorial Health System True North.The individual must support the mission, vision, and goals of HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital and serve as a role model for CARES values.Adheres to change control processes.Participates in cross training to optimize department resources.Demonstrates excellent attendance and actively participates in a variety of meetings and training sessions as required.Demonstrates a friendly, responsive, service-minded attitude to all internal and external customers.Communicates ideas effectively. Shares information and keeps others properly informed. Gives, and is open to useful feedback.Adheres to the HealthAlliance Hospital Code of Conduct and Behavior Standards and dress code.Complies with established environment of care/safety policies and procedures and all health and safety requirements.Maintains and fosters an organized, clean and safe work environment.Contributes to the development and application of process improvements.Maintains a collaborative, team relationship with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the group's achievement of goals and to help foster a positive work environment.Attends staff meetings and in-service programs as required or directed. Keeps current with hospital and unit changes by reading communication boards and/or books, bulletin boards, posted notices and reads and responds to emails on a regular basis.Practices cost containment and fiscal responsibility through the efficient use of supplies, equipment, time, etc.Complies with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.Respects diverse views and approaches, and contributes in maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.Qualifications:Minimum: High School Diploma or equivalent and AHIMA CertificationRHIA, RHIT or CCS certificationPreferred:Associates degree with AHIMA Certification1 - 3 years experience in inpatient coding and DRG reimbursementExperience/Skills:Comprehensive Knowledge of Medical terminology.Computer literacy and proficient with Windows applications.Excellent customer service skills with the ability to communicate effectively.Exceptional organizational skills with attention to detail.Excellent knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology and ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 coding.Ability to problem solve, organize and prioritize workload to meet TAT benchmarks.In depth Knowledge of report writing and query building.Comprehensive knowledge of billing practice and procedures.Must maintain current knowledge of coding and billing practices through reading or newsletters, publications and attendance at seminars.Must maintain a positive attitude and professional manner.Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability or protected veteran status.We're striving to make respect a part of everything we do at UMass Memorial Health - for our patients, our community and each other.
