Job DescriptionJob Title: Labor and Delivery Nurse

Job Specialty: Labor and Delivery Nurse, Obstetrics RN, Postpartum, LDRP, Perinatal, Critical Access Hospital RN

Job Duration: 13 weeks

Shift: 7 pm to 7 am, varying nights of the week

Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week

Experience: Minimum of 2 years

License: RN License

Certifications: Must have BLS until ACLS is obtained, ACLS, PALS, and NRP on hire

Must-Have: RN license in Alaska, Flu vaccination

Job Description:

- Perform a variety of nursing care procedures requiring professional knowledge and consideration of specific patient conditions and treatments.- Provide support to individuals of all ages and their families during antepartum, postpartum, laboring stages, newborn baby care, and care of post-surgical C-section patients.- Respond to all emergencies, including trauma and fetal distress C-sections, providing total peri-operative nursing care.- Promote safe, therapeutic, and efficient care for patients and implement appropriate infection control measures.- Set priorities for patient care based on acuity and/or patient preferences; anticipate potential problems and adapt to changes.- Administer age-specific medications and therapeutics accurately; carry out medical and nursing care plans.- Provide focused 1:1 care during labor, including medical interventions, comfort measures, pain relief, and labor coaching.- Monitor, interpret, and document electronic fetal heart rate tracings; perform scheduled NSTs.- Care for high-risk maternal or neonatal patients, stabilize and prepare patients for transfer.- Offer breastfeeding support and education; triage OB phone calls and unscheduled outpatients.- Assist with bedside procedures and perform well-baby checks.- Accomplish nursing assessments through interviewing, observation, and the nursing process.- Impart educational knowledge to enhance decision-making and promote understanding among patients and their families.- Communicate positively and constructively with staff, patients, and the healthcare team.- Develop and contribute to a plan of nursing action based on existing and potential patient problems.- Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to unit goal setting; attend mandatory training and competency checks.- Take call as assigned, and perform other duties as needed.
