Job Description

This position supports all Environmental Affairs Department (EA) activities aimed at managing risks of workplace injury and illness and maintaining compliance with pertinent EH&S codes, standards and guidelines. These EH&S activities include identifying hazards and safety issues; developing, implementing and monitoring effective hazard controls and solutions; and assuring continued effectiveness through safety systems development and continual process oversight and improvement. The position plans, coordinates and performs general safety functions that include conducting safety surveys, investigating incidents, exposure monitoring, managing hazardous materials, assisting in responding to various emergencies, training, and collecting and managing data and documentation. This position will cover assignments at all BWH locations. This position's day-to-day duties will be coordinated and supervised by the EH&S department's EH&S Manager and may be responsible for supervising the duties of 1-2 Environmental Health & Safety Specialists.Qualifications

Bachelor of Science or equivalent degree in the environmental health & safety field with three 3-5 years of experience.Basic competency in general chemistry.Strong interpersonal skills and verbal and written communication skills.Capable of performing tasks while wearing a respirator and/or other personal protective equipment.Professional certifications (e.g. CSP, CIH, CHMM, HEM) preferred.OSHA HAZWOPER Certification preferred.RCRA/DOT Certification preferred.Additional Skills and Responsibilities

Ability to read sources of chemical hazard information, recognize risks and apply pertinent safety practices.Presentation skills; proficiency in verbal and written English language communication; ability to deliver training presentations to varied audiences of varied sizes.Ability to interact effectively with people individually and in small groups.Must handle conflict tactfully and constructively.Flexibility and teamwork: this department has a broad set of responsibilities requiring all technical staff to multitask and support others.Computer competency with general office software and apps.Physically able to perform tasks such as walking, standing, climbing, lifting, carrying.Working Conditions

Work under the supervision of the Safety & Environmental Affairs Manager and Department Director.Will handle hazardous chemical materials, including spills.Occasional work in environments with biological, chemical, or physical hazards.Periodically required to work off-hours; occasionally required to respond to urgent matters with short notice on regular and off-hours.Must take on-call duties in a regular schedule rotating with other department staff on regular and off-hours.Must travel to off-site facilities periodically to respond and/or investigate incidents or support program needs.EEO Statement
